How To Add The Smc File Extension To Snes Roms
« on: June 08, 2005, 02:18:00 PM »

Okay we all know how it goes, you download a set of snes roms and xsnes9x doesnt see them,
so upon closer inspection (forum complaining without using the search)
you discover that your roms dont have the smc file extension.

now what you gotta do is you rename them to have smc behind the filename,

and no we are not going to rename them one by one (you gotta be crazy to do that)
and no we are also not going to download a special program that does it for us (lazy bastards)

this example is going to show you how to rename your roms that are in a dir called snesroms located on c:\

now remember that this only renames the unzipped roms, so you might wanna unzip your roms should they be zipped.

you can always rezip them later by using my other guide.

now on with the extension adding!

start up a program called command prompt
it should be right on top of your user posted image
if you cant find it its located at c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe (it comes with every version of windows)

now start it and do exactly what i did on the picture below.

here's the same picture but in yellow i wrote an explanation of what i did.

There ya go, all set.

I wish I knew this earlier, I renamed about 100 roms just to add the .smc extension.  :P  At least now I can do it to the rest if I felt like adding more roms to the HD.  Thank you very much.

Heh, I never thought I'd see a tutorial about how to rename some files in DOS!

You young whipper-snappers never had to grow up in the days when DOS is all we had, and we liked it!  (some of us still do-I got my start on DOS 2.1)

Thanks, that was really fun, and now I feel quite old. :P

A couple of different ways to do that.  One, you can use the Good Utilities to do that for you with the "forcexbox" command.  Here is a guide here:  Link

The Good Utilites can also be used for other things like auditing your ROMS to tell you what you are missing and it can also be used to sort them out by region, etc...

But if you are really only interested in simply renaming them so you can FTP them to your XBox then I would use a program like PreXBoxCopyTool.  It's super fast and very easy to understand and use.  If you do use it, I recommend setting the "Choose Case" option to  "No Change" and checking the last box at the bottom that says, "If filename is too long remove all spaces before losing characters".

If renaming one by one, why not just:

Open a folder, along the top click "Tools" then "Folder Options", a new window should appear click on the "View" tab look for "Hide extensions for known file types" and disable it (uncheck it). All files should now have the extensions shown. Right click on the file you wish to rename, click on rename and change from beyond the period to smc. Alot easier and less complicated.
