How To Properly Rename Your Console Roms.
« on: November 10, 2004, 05:59:00 PM »

I was pm'd and asked for help with using GoodN64 and GoodGui, so i decided
to write a little help file.
but it turned out pretty big so i decided i might as well post it here so other people might benefit from it.

1 - My native language is not English, so don't complain about my grammar.
2 - Maybe someone decides to complain how something could be done easier, well shutup because if you could have done it better you should have done it,
my main goal was to keep it easy for beginners.
3 - I use GoodN64 as an example here, but you can change GoodN64 with whatever Goodtool you are using (goodsnes, goodgen etc)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can download GoodGui here & Goodn64 and the other GoodTools at Cowering's GoodTools website

1 - Unzip GoodGui into a dir (call the dir goodgui or something)

2 - Unzip the GoodN64 zip file into the GoodGui directory (dont put it in a subdir!) (this will make the config easier)

3 - Start GoodGui

4 - Go to "main" then select "config"

5 - Scroll down there until you reach "Nintendo 64"

6 - Press the Red button and browse to your N64 rom directory, (then press ok)

7 - On the top of the config screen are 3 options, they are pretty self explanatory but here's a rundown.

Setup the first one to where your GoodN64.exe is, (this should point to your GoodGui dir)
The second should be set to "false" (this should be set to false since i told you to put GoodN64 into your GoodGui dir)
And to setup the 3rd option just browse to your GoodGui dir and select Goodinfo.cfg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok now go back to the main screen, and go to "select system" now select Nintendo 64.

Now we will organize the roms, so select the following options,

*rename (this will rename your roms to have the correct rom name)
the roms will also be moved into a new dir called "ren"

*dirs (this will put all roms in country specific dirs, and hacked and translated roms in their own)

Done.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want to use your roms on your xbox and cant seem to transfer them,
then the filename of the rom is probably too long.
do the following to be able to copy them to your xbox.

1 - unzip all your roms (lets just do one system at a time okay? lets not mix roms)
2 - put all roms into one dir (no subdirs)
3 - start goodgui and "select system"
4 - then click on "rename" & "forcexbox"
5 - then click "go"

now all your roms will be put into one dir with xbox compatible filenames,
now start up the newest version of winrar (always best to use the last version with winrar to be sure)
now browse to your romdir, go to "file" then "select all" this will select all files,
now right click on the selected roms and choose "add files to archive"

Okay now we're gonna setup some zipping options.

In the "general" tab we will click on "archive format" and select "ZIP"
on the top go to "files" and then select "archive" select "put each file to separate archive"
and just to be sure go to "file paths" and select "do not store paths"
then click on "OK" all files will now be zipped into separate files (with xbox compatible filelenght names)

now delete all unzipped roms. (or move the unzipped roms to somewhere else if you're not sure about what you're doing)

now boot up goodgui again and select your system to rename,
click on : "rename" & "dirs" & "forcexbox"

Now all your roms will be :

a) Named correctly (inside the zip and outside) (last time i checked the saveram was saved with the internal zip name, if this name was too long it would not save to the xbox HD, this might have changed since then but i dont know, so there ya go)
b) Put into the correct country specific dirs (you dont want european roms on your xbox? then just dont copy the euro dir)
c) Zipped to spare hd space.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks a ton VampX....  I haven't used the GoodTools before, though I have known about them...  The one thing I didn't know is that they have a force xbox rename!

This should almost be a sticky up under "why can't I ftp <rom> to my xbox"  as many roms named with the full name won't...

I say sticky this, or make it a tutorial, or have a stickied thread with a link to this and other useful topics (such as the converting 16-bit game pads for use with Xbox)

Edit: I guess it already is  laugh.gif

I'm very confused...

it didn't work for me. I wanted the extensions changed from ".usa" to whatever they are supposed to be, as I was told xbox doesn't recognize ".usa". However, the method above, might have changed the rom name, which doesn't matter, I didn't really want or need that, but it never touched the extension. That is what makes me confused, it doesn't make sense, as the extension is the most important part and since the xbox doesn't seem to recognize ".usa", or as someone has told me, maybe I have some other configurable error other then the extension, I'm not sure...

Does anyone know what I use to rename the extensions in dos?
rename *.* .usa ???

Also, does it matter what the extensions are? Do they have to be the exact same ones as when the game was dumped from the cartridge or will any other that is recognizable by Surreal 64 do?

Please help.

Thanks.

Download ToolN64 from the bottom then use it to correctly rename file extensions.
