Midway Treasures 2 / Mk2/mk3 Stand Alone
« on: October 31, 2004, 01:16:00 AM »

My WIP for the MK2 / MK3 "Stand Alone" Project

As you already may know, Midway released a new compliation called "Midway Treasures 2".  This game contains many older classics, inluding Mortal Kombat II & Morta Kombat 3.  There has been a small group of people who would appreciate a solution to "remove" excess content from the original disc & have MK2/MK3 run from a dedicated XBE.

As many already know, the root of the disc contains many xbes, of them, multiple the default.xbe, dashupdate.xbe, and many individual game xbes, none of them MK2 or MK3.

I've tried for some time attempting to get the default.xbe to directly launch the mk2 or mk3, but it hasn't worked.  So far, using exploritory trial/error & reading the forums.  Under the classic folder, mk2.sr & mk3.sr contain all the game content.  After reading, I believe I've been looking in the wrong area...

Instead of trying to patch the default.xbe, we should be looking into the individual xbe games.  I've opened pitf.xbe & wiz.xbe in a hex editor.  When doing so, I've found their corresponding .sr files, pitf.sr & woz.sr respectivly.  I hexedit'd these files to "mk2.sr"   After booting the xbe, it fails to load.  With more examination, the same xbes also contain references to .rom / .wav files that are contained within the .sr files.  At a command prompt, type "type mk2.sr", it'll list all the files.  I have replaced the normal contents of the normal .xbe to the contents of "mk2.sr" (aka hexediting the games .xbe to reflect mk2.sr .rom/.wav files, along with the mk2.sr file".  I know get a "Dirty Disc Error".

Any help would be appreciated.  I'd like to establish an open diaglogue to fix this.

Here's the best/smallest I was able to do:

Delete everything in root minus jarvos.xbe.
Rename it to default.xbe.

In the classic folder, delete everything but:
hrd.sr
mat2.sr
mk2.sr
mk3.sr
narc.sr
rwt.sr
tcarn.sr

Leave the media folder intact.
Kill the movie folder.

This will brings up a simple menu that allows you to load MK2/3 directly (and a few other games) without any videos or whatnot, and brings the total size down to 600-ish megs.

not to knock what you're doing but this isn't the right place to talk about it as you are talking about hacking a retail game collection, nothing to deal with emulation.

again, i'm just saying that but i'm sure some others want this too but i'm happy enough to have bought the collecton as is B)

Actually... MK1 was on its own disc already. Just had to delete all the extra trading card videos.

MK1 was never ripped properly. It was just the same "kill everything but the game, manually navigate another menu" principle.

It would be nice to jump straight to the game, such as splitting the SFA Collection.

I'll keep an eye on this topic. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to remove the necessity of the extra menus.

Sorry about the post prican24, I just knew that this idea was started some time ago, and I found it only correct to start a new thread here.  I also have a hunch, that why can't I take many of the ROM files (such as UMK3), use the COPY /B command to join all the files into 1 big file.  Rename it to mk2.sr and see if MAT2 plays it.

Still working on it in my free time

Has anyone figured out how to do this, yet?  Besides Glitch as I guess he's keeping it a secret.

Oh, and where is mortal kombat trilogy from?  I know 1,2,3 are from MK:Deception and MAT 2, but not the trilogy version.

I am figuring that Glitch just has shortcuts to console versions of the MK games (Except for maybe MK1, which can be got from the MK:D bonus disc).
