Just played a song using pump successfully. Pretty cool, never tried it before.
Also, I've just added support for redefining keys using the controller.
Screen resizing is also on the list.

For the noob (me) what is pump? And do you plan to release this version? Re-mapping with xbox sounds ace!

Hi smile.gif

I play 20 DDR songs and 20 PIU songs everyday on my Mac.

I have a Cobalt Flux V2 platform where the middle works as a Pump button. FANTASTIC !!!

Before I got the Cobalt Flux V2 - I simply used the forward arrow on my normal dance mat as the Pump button.

It is strange at first - but works really well once you get used to it.

I would recommend a Cobalt Flux V2 though - since it emulates the real thing perfectly.

Speaking of using pads...  My Pump It Up pad uses a USB connector.  It's possible to use a USB connector on the Xbox with an adapter that goes in the controller port.  Will the Xbox/Stepmania recognize the PIU pad as a controller and be able to be defined to things in Stepmania?  I've heard that USB controllers won't work for most other emulators, but Stepmania is rather different from them.  Also, I believe the original PIU pads used the PS/2 port but worked with a PS/2 -> USB converter.  In that case, maybe PIU pads just act as a keyboard.  The Xbox DOS emulator works with USB keyboards, so maybe the pump pad will work here.  If any one has a clue about this it'd be much appreciated.

Also - Anyone know how the second Pump It Up pad connects on a PC?  I've heard that it connects to the control box of the first pad, but I've also heard that you can attach the second pad into the PC, one pad on the PS/2 port and the other on USB port, or both on USB ports.

Thanks

Nope, not going to work.

Stepmania is no different than the other emulators, in that it would still require drivers for the controller being used. They are not built into the program as is.

Well Stepmania supports USB keyboards right?  I'm guessing so since the faqs say you need one if you want to remap keys on the Xbox...  Do you know if the PIU pads are just custom keyboards?  The first version of the pads were PS/2 only so they'd work without USB driver installation.

If they are then maybe they'd work..
If not, then shit.

If not... Then the only way to get a PIU pad working on Xbox is by gutting a Xbox controller and resoldering the points?  I was hoping that I'd be able to play PIU on a TV, as its usually PC only game and all my computers are in very bad places for a dancing (dancing.. hah) game.  I know some people just use video out off a laptop onto a TV, but I don't own a laptop and I'm not spending money on one to play PIU.  Bah  sad.gif

Good question.

I imagine that if a PIU pad was using standard usb kb mapings, then it WOULD work with stepmania. I hadn't actually thought about that, and was in controller = different than KB mode.

Hiya ppls. Good to see there's interest in this project still.

Ichibo: If the PIU pad acts as a USB keyboard then its theoretically possible. If its working as a USB joystick device then it probably won't without some sort of driver. I don't have any idea on what would be involved for getting such devices working on the Xbox.

With the current version we're working on, you don't need a USB keyboard to map the controllers anymore.

At the moment, our main focus is keeping up with the development and making sure any changes are compatible with the Xbox version. Right now, the current version isn't supporting characters or other themes. We'll be looking at fixing this up, adding vid support and maybe looking into implementing virtual memory.

Once a stable version is made that is actually worth releasing we'll look into doing it, though I have no idea have one distributes things in the "usual places". I know Xport is looking at porting StepMania once the stable release is out, and with his superior coding skills and previous experience with distribution, it will probably be from him that you will end up getting it  cool.gif

Oh and just so you know, we now know that it works with Evox M7 and M8. Wow! tongue.gif

That's all for now. More as it happens.

Any new progress on this?

there supposed to be a major release of the cvs around the bend so xport is waiting for that instead of updating it now only to need to update it again.  just give it time man .

I haven't had too much time to develop lately as other stuff has been occupying my attention.

I've had to focus on keeping the latest version compatible so I haven't yet looked at the characters problem. I've just this minute fixed up a bug that prevented additional song folders being loaded (so you can put in A:\ if you want the songs to load from a dvd), and I've now got to try and fix a problem that has stopped pump it up from working. *sigh* Not being able to use the debugger sucks. I've tested the SMMAX2 theme and it kinda works if its smzipped and put in the packages directory. I haven't had the chance to try other themes yet.

I'm not sure if you guys find this interesting or not, its just a way of saying, "I'm still doing stuff".

If I can manage to fix PUI support, I'd think about putting this version out as a stopgap til Xport does his version. But, with no character support and no real new features (apart from being about to map controls without a keyboard, wow), it would only really be a benefit to those who want the better stability of the newer version; I'm not sure it would be worth it. Any thoughts?

Hopefully, I'll have more news soon. Cheers.

It can't hurt I suppose. As I said earlier, I'd rather squash this PUI bug before releasing anything; I've almost tracked it down and PUI was working a few builds ago (on a build I'm currently playing on).

I'll talk to jsrlepage about it. If he and the other devs don't mind, I'll see about releasing it once its stable (ie when the bug is squished).

As for a name well, Stepmania CVS, Stepmania RC1 (or alpha 24), Stepmania WIP (date), etc. It's not something I'm worried about.  beerchug.gif

Update for those interested:

I was able to get Stepmania to load up with the Xecuter bios last night (Aussie time). It seems that one or more of the libraries in the CVS were not compiled with the MS XDK. I've yet to track down which ones, but after recompiling them all, it loaded up.

Virtual memory has been implemented. This doesn't mean that super-hyper-mega themes can be used, as texture/video memory can't be paged (AFAIK), but it does mean that most of the time it should work without running out of memory with large amounts of songs.

A fix for 128 meg RAM users has been implemented, but because I don't have one such Xbox, it needs to be tested.

Most of the functionality of the PC version is working on the Xbox, including SMLan, meaning you can play against someone over the net or lan. Movie support has not been looked at yet, and is not high on the priority list.

There is a minor issue with the arrow field placement on some types of games. With that fixed, I'd like to get it released. Cheers!
