dang ressurectionx you don't leave much for improvement do you?

I personally only use emulators for the following systems:

1. snes
2. nes
3. arcade (mameox128, mamedox arcades, fbaxxpro, and cpx3)
4. turbografix16
5. genesis
6. master system, gamegear etc
7. N64
8. Atari 2600
9. Playstation (only about 5 games though)
10. Game boy advance

as for which emulators I use, I use the ones listed in the great emu thread. They are all up to date.

although I have those installed I use only these systems: snes, nes, arcade, 64, gba... all else I just can't get into...

yeah competes2win.... probably more than a little crazy, I know.....

If you saw how much work I put into making sure that every game I have for them works and the filenames look good and every game has their own screenshot, you'd think me absolutely insane.  (I haven't, and don't ever plan on doing this with any of the Commodore emulators though.  I'll probably go through them one day and just keep the games I know and dump the rest.  The Commodore 64 folders I have are a complete mess and the real eyesore of the bunch.

I didnt' even know until after all that work that there were datfiles floating around out there to rename all of the roms for you, and then screenshot packs that matched those romnames.  I did them all by hand.  Glad I had a bulk renamer to take out some of the work, but still....  So my Mame project is actually pretty small compared to everything else I've done.

Probably won't ever play more than 5% of what I've got on there too.   It's just kind of a museum for old school games.

Right now I really only play the Playstation, NES, SNES, N64, Arcades, Atari 2600 5200 7800, TG16, and Sega CD.  I really only use Surreal for Mario and Mario Kart 64.  That's the best version of Mario Kart in my opinion.  Used to play that with friends all the time back in 2000.

Once I'm done with the MAME and PSX compatibility, I plan on seeing what XBMC can really do.  I've got a ton of Karaoke songs ready to rock with and I'd like to try some of those Python scripts out too.  I saw somebody mention that they were using the YouTube one to stream Guitar videos and I'd really love to be able to do that.  I'm always doing that on my comptuer, but I'd love to be able to jam on my couch with the big screen TV instead of on my computer chair with the small monitor.

I'm going to have to disagree with you ressurectionx about mario kart 64... I just can't see anything better than the original on the snes. However, to be honest I have only played the mario kart for the snes and the 64 and not for the gamecube or any other system. Apparently the folks at Ign.com have said that the newest mario kart for the DS is the best... but regardless we each have a right to our own opinions.

Hey Xyteam,

Here's hoping that not everybody figures out what the XBox can do.....   That's how I pick them up on the cheap.  I've got three of them of my own.... one in my living room and bedroom and one that will find a home with some of my family that will be there when I'm in town visiting.  One has a 500GB hard drive, one a 120GB hard drive and the last one I picked up about 2 months ago from sombody at work that I haven't actually even tested yet.  (hope it works, right).  That one is funny cause it's the original XBox and the controllers are freaking HUGE!  Plus I bought two more and gave them to my brothers as birthday/christmas presents.  My friends want me to make ones for them, but I want everything perfect before I do that.  I don't want to have to re-do peoples boxes for them like I will my brothers when I finish all of this MAME business.  I'm not looking to buy them and sell them cause after the price of the box and hard drive there's really no money to be made anyhow, not to mention the fact that I've got a good job and don't care to be doing anything so stupidly illegal for a measly few bucks, but after all of this work it's really easy to make another box for my friends because everything is mirrored identically on my PC hard drive.

Maybe I'll give that Bleemcast a try.  I think my brother has a dreamcast that he doesn't use.  It works a lot better than PCSXBox then?  Cause I'm pretty frustrated how many games I'd like to play on there again without having to mod my old PSX or my PS2 to play them.

And yes, the GameCube version of Mario Kart is rubbish.  I couldn't stand it.  I picked up a new gamecube that came cheap with an extra controller and Double Dash and brought it over to one of my friends houses that I used to play MK64 with and we played it for about 20 minutes before getting bored.  Too many great things about the battle system from 64 that were dropped or changed enough to make it not fun.  At the very least, they could have brought the Block Fort back... the courses on Double Dash were too small and it seemed like it was just luck if you won with all the crap flying around and no real places to be strategic since you're right on top of each other the whole time.

As for the shooters and fighters on MAME, I'm sure that I can get you a list together.  There are a couple of fighters that look like they came out before Street Fighter I actually, and there are some newer type ones that work well that haven't been added.  Most of the SHUMPS that I tested that aren't already on Arcades are pretty oldschool like Xevious or don't work at full speed with the sound enabled, but I do believe there are a few that were newer that hadn't been included on Arcades.   I have the SHUMPS and fighters marked as such and I was going to present them all to BritneysPAIRS when my list was complete, but it should't be a problem to list them here beforehand.  I just need to figure out how to transfer them from spreadsheet to here.  I know somebody (maybe you) gave me a link to google in another thread how to do that, but I haven't tried it yet.  That'll kind of give you an idea of the list that I've created too.  I might need a few days though because I get off of work here at 6:30 in the morning then I need to get some sleep before I go out of town to meet some friends for the game.  Remind me if I haven't posted them in my thread by Tuesday night.

Hey competes2win,

I've never played the DS version either so I couldn't say.  Like I said above, you can just skip the Game Cube one.  It really is crap.  I really liked the SNES one too.  I think as far as the racing goes, I probably do like the SNES version better, but as far as battlemode.... well there's nothing quite like the feeling of a perfectly timed jump from the third level of the block fort with star power right on the head of an unsuspecting newbie.  cool.gif

and they don't even have X-Com:  UFO Defense on there.

That's the one that I'd love to be able to play on the XBox.

Bwahahhaha, don't get me started talking about that game...  muhaha.gif

Though I did try running it through DosBox I didn't bother messing with the speed settings to actually make it playable. I much prefer games of that type to be on the PC.

I have the DS version of Kart, and possibly the 64 version as well (I've started to lose track of what is and isn't part of my collection). The only time I've played Kart 64 for more then a minute was through Surreal... The two versions are similar (many of the courses appear to be clones), though the DS has 3D karts and a "turbo" move triggered by sliding (it takes a bit of skill to perfect and needs to be used often). I'd pick DS out of the two, though I haven't played Double Dash or the Snes release (I'd assume there was a GBA version as well).

Hey Bomb Bloke,

Having originally acquired a demo floppy disk of X-Com that I ripped out of a bagged up PC gamer magazine at the supermarket that I knew my mom wouldn't buy me when I was about 11 years old I fell in love with it.  (That's how file sharing was done back in the early 90's for all you youngins who don't believe that people ever lived without the internet).  Then I got it on Playstation about 5 years later and have beat it all the way through about 5 or 6 times since.  I have to say though, that you take my level of enthusiasm for the game to a much, much higher level.  It is one of my favorite games ever though.  Too bad there isn't more like them with updated graphics.  Do you know of any?   I've never played any of the sequels, so I don't know if they're any good either.

What do you mean by 3D cart on the DS?  I didn't get the feeling that the carts looked 2D on Mario Kart 64... but I'm assuming either way they're done better on the DS port than the original.  I do know that the 64 version had the turbo feature you're talking about.  I think I played the game 6 months before I even read about it and once I figured that out I was able to smack noobs around until they figured out I was doing something every time Wario would laugh that insanely annoying laugh.  I'd always tell them how to do it once they figured out I was doing something.   I had gotten so good at that game that I would play 3 other people and try to do the slide and keep it going all around the top layer of the block fort without falling off just avoiding their stuff in the mean time.  Never made it around though, but I've been close.  I could do that skid all the way from the middle of the map and spiral to the top floor and swing from one color to the next over the bridge.

I'm assuming that sideways skid trick that puts the yellow and orange ZZZZZZZ's behind your kart before you release it and get a turbo is what you were talking about, right?

If you get a chance, I'd give double dash a whirl just to see how inferior it is, but I'd never recommend you pay for it.  The super nintendo one was really good though and the battle mode was almost as fun on there too.  Just can't beat a multi-platform game of battle mode though.  I'd give it a try on Znes.  I don't know how impressive it would be for somebody who never played it back in the day, but it's worth a look for ya.

There are a handful of X-Com games.

The second title (Terror from the Deep) is essentially the same game with an aquatic theme (it's also available for the PS). It suffered from some rather bad bugs regarding the research tree, which could potentially make it impossible to complete the game, but did offer a handful of improvements as well.

The third title (Apocalypse) qualified as a proper "new" game, and it's very good (though opinion is divided over whether it beats the original). The GeoScape is replaced with a CityScape populated with other organisations, who battle with one another and form alliances etc. For example, the police and goverment are on your side, but the alien-loving Cult of Sirius just wish you'd leave their otherworldly friends alone.

So you can, if you wish, level the entire city and send in your ground forces to steal equipment. That plus the option to play in either real time or turn based mode, and the ability to demolish entire buildings by taking out the supports, makes it pretty cool.

Then there was Interceptor (UFO meets Wing Commander) and Enforcer (you're a robot built by an Ex-X-Com scientist, running around in 3D person blowing up all aliens in your path). Neither game was really that good, and due to a whole bunch of companies being shut down the series basically died as the rights got passed around.

However, the current buzz around the web is that the current owners (Take2) might be (read: probably is) working on a new title, and that the developer they've assigned to the task is Irrational (the guys who worked on System/BioShock). They refuse to admit anything however.

If you're looking for a modern equivalent, take a peek at ALTAR's UFO series (inspired by X-Com): Aftermath/Aftershock/Afterlight. They turned out to be quite popular.

Kart 64 seemed to use a "Doom" style 3D for the racers - Lots of 2D sprites, displayed according to the angle the racer was on. I suppose a couple of videos would show  the difference better then I can explain it.

So yeah, that turbo move does look similar. Guess I just didn't understand the 64 versions controls that well.

Hey.  Thanks for the rundown on the XCOM games.  I'll have to try them out when I get a chance.  Looking forward to a new one coming out with today's graphics too.  I see what you mean about the Mario Kart not being 3D on the 64 version too.  Big difference there when you have the two to compare each other too.  Basically it looks like the same game though.  I'd probably never play the DS version myself though because who wants to play a game on a two inch screen when you can play it on a 51" screen?  I don't travel a lot and when I do, I'm usually the one driving a real car.

Sorry I didn't get back to ya earlier.  Just been REAL busy with MAME.

The DS may be a portable system, but it's still got more power then a '64. Mine spends most of it's time sitting next to my bed.  laugh.gif

Getting a bit more use at the moment; I've been away from home for quite a while now... Haven't been able to play on my X-Box for over a month. Got a chance last week, and guess what? It's toast. I need a new motherboard.  sad.gif

(Hey, after at least five attempts at a RAM upgrade, I'm surprised it lastest as long as it did. Note for all interested - Flash your TSOP or install a modchip first!!)

Sorry to hear about the dead mobo man.  If you lived in my apartment complex I'd let you borrow one of mine if you promised not to try installing more ram on it.  cool.gif   I know my limitations and I don't think I'll be trying that unless somebody starts giving me free XBoxes to try it out on.

Don't know if you've seen it or not, but I'm done with the MAME compatability.  When I get the datfiles up here you'll have to check it out if you're into MAME.

I'm a FBA-XXX boy myself, I keep just the small handful of games I actually like to play with it. Otherwise getting hold of a complete set of wide icons for XBMC would be hell... As it is there still aren't (m)any icons around for the other systems, so I've already got my work cut out for me!

That, and my 320gb drive is filled to bursting point already...  unsure.gif

Yeah... I got the 500 GB myself and it's a pain having to keep adding and removing games when testing them for the PSX.  I had to take a break from it and I ended up doing the entire MAME compatibility.  I'll be getting back to the PSX soon.

I'm into all those old arcade games cause that's what I grew up with, so it wasn't completely miserable putting myself through that.  Got to see a lot of games I haven't thought about in 20 or so years.  FBA's a real cool emulator too, but most of those games came out after I was out of the arcade scene in high school.  My games are so old that the datfile I made for MAMEox is smaller than a PSX disk.  Always made me laugh when somebody would buy one of those Williams arcade classics for PSX and get 5 games for 40 bucks when I had a few thousand on my PC
