The Three Greatest Mame Games You Never Played...
« on: August 14, 2004, 05:46:00 PM »

I've created this thread to draw attention to three MAME gems that I didn't catch the first time round. It would be nice if you could reply with three quality MAME titles (three only please, too many from each person makes it pointless) that you never played until you started emulating.

Please include the ROM name, game title and brief discription of the gameplay.

My three:

Bal Cube (balcube.zip)

(IMG:http://images.webmagic.com/klov.com/screens/B/xBal_Cube.png)

A crazy variation on all the Tetris style clones that populate a large chunk of MAME. Think of it as a cross between Arkanoid and Tetris - seriously fun and seriously addictive.

More More Plus (mormorp.zip)

(IMG:http://caesar.logiqx.com/snaps/emus/multi/mame/moremorp_2.png)

This game has everything - fishing, spot the difference, reaction games etc... it reminds me of a similar variety title on the Dreamcast. Really addictive and full of surprises.

Neo Drift Out (neodrift.zip)

(IMG:http://mitglied.lycos.de/Kay/pictures/neodrift.jpg)

As I was deleting all of the NeoGeo ROMs from my collection (never played anything on the Geo - it seemed to be full of the same old fighting games rehashed again and again -- yes I was, and am, a Street Fighter II fiend) this one somehow slipped through. I fired it up and was instantly addicted. Hard as hell and really enjoyable.

For ones that don't play in FBA I'd say:

Dead Connection - You're an undercover cop or something and it's a revenge story. Basically each level is about one screen big and all you do is dive/roll about and shoot people, but it's so fun and the environments are so destructable.

Cybattlers - Think of a standard top down shooter, but you can face in any direction, you have melee attacks (you're robots, not planes or spaceships) and your weapons change every level.

Gals Panic - I can't remember what this game is based on, it's the one where you have to draw lines across the screen to "capture" part of it and once you capture a certain amount, you win, except this time, it's with naked women, it's just so funny.

Robotoron! This game is so great. I love it. =)

Filename: robotron.zip
Manufacturer: Williams
Year: 1982

(IMG:http://www.tripoint.org/robo/robstart.gif)

I'm sure most of you have already played this, but if you haven't, think Smash TV with "better" graphics =)

devlkore: Thanks for the tip on Dead Connection. Although it would have been a much better game if you could go in one direction and shoot in another... like in Robotron!! =)

EDIT: I have two more games to go, but I can't decide right now. I'll make another post later.

Gals Panic is based on Quix. I'd seen it long before emulating, so I don't count that.
It's sad, but I honestly never had even seen a Metal Slug game before Mame. Sorry. tongue.gif
I'd never played Willow on the CPS board before, either. It's a lot of fun, very similar to Strider, actually.

Do they all run well in the latest MAME on Xbox?
Also, that robot thing looks like a characature version of the robot from Darkstalkers.

As for Dead Connection, I see what you mean, I don't mind really, I just wish you could run and shoot at the same time or shoot while diving through the air Max Payne style (without the slow-mo).

No screenies, sorry... and 3 only is tough, what about speed rumbler, rally bike/dash yaro... Ok I stop cheating ;)

Mille Miglia Great Milles Rally... or something (gtmr.zip)

It's one of those Drift Out clones and it's in my memory because it was the first game I didn't play in the arcade that I found to be interesting (Tough days those trying out crappy roms upon crappy roms). Anyway as I typed, it's a Drift Out clone, with the added value of a great "speed" effect. It is very dynamic, and I love the ambiance overall. I never even heard of it before, but to me, it is the best game of its genre, featuring quite a nice trip. The top view version of Outrun ;)
Lately the game has been glitching a bit graphically I think.

Quarth (aka Block Hole) (quarth.zip)

One of those weird "shooters meet Tetris" games. You shoot blocks to give them a rectangle shape so they disappear. The gameplay is much deeper than it seems at first, as doing masssive reshaping to gain time is very rewarding. The little plus are the game modes : the Versus mode is quite uninteresting, but the Coop mode lead to a weird and hilarious versus play, since both ships block each other's way :D

Daisukiss (daiskiss.zip)

The wicked arcade port of infamous girl game Tokimeki Memorial. You pick up a guy or a girl, and select your "target" which you'll have to try to kiss if possible. This revolves around funky mini-games, such as Takoyaki cooking or Pockebell quiz. Featuring a crazy overheated soundtrack, the game glitches graphically sooner or later in 2 players mode, sadly.

I didn't know More more plus, and I absolutely love this kind of game, thank you for the heads up, 0123456.

Yes, they work.

Dragoon Might : runs perfectly, but a bit slowly (Frameskip mode auto).

Daraku Tenshi : runs slowly, but playable (set Frameskip mode Lvl 7 or 8) with sound issue.

Asura Blade : works well (set Frameskip mode Lvl 8) with sound issue.

Just wanted to post some screenshots from the game that MCurley mentioned, Ninja Baseball Batman. I just tried it and it's hilarious! One of the strangest side-scrolling beat ém ups I have ever played.

Mega Man: The Power Battle.  (Yeah, it's CPS, but it plays great on MAMEoX)  The game consists entirely of fighting bosses, without all those pesky little enemies and strategic jumping in between.

Ultra X Weapons, an enjoyable, but difficult, vertical-scrolling shooter.

Finally, Mahjong Erotica Golf.  Not because I like it so much as that it keeps me up at night wondering who came up with such a bizarre idea.  biggrin.gif

EDIT: filenames are megaman, ultrax, and mjegolf.
