I want to make a skin for Link to the Past for GBA. one of the menu screens was to have link run through the forbidden forest before he got his master sword. the squirrels and birds would run through, he'd then reach the sword and try to pull it out. you know how he strains when he can't pull or lift something...well, he'd be doing that for a bit, give up, and walk away...blah blah

the problem is that there's fog in the forest, so there should be fog in the skin. most sprites will be in the front if they're comparatively lower down on the screen, which is usually fine. so i have the fog, but as few may know, the larger the size of the sprites, the more likely that sprite will be UNDERNEATH the smaller sprites. having the fog underneath link, the birds, squirrels, and the master sword just would not do. same for rain, firestorm effects (in my ogre battle skin), arches (in my legend of mana skin), and pretty much any other large act of nature.

my idea is to allow a priority of which sprite comes first (or foremost). the fog could be set to 1 or 0, and sprites that are meant to go underneath could be set to 1 or 2 on down. effects like fog and rain would then be possible.

in spite of your original disinterest in skins, you've been quite generous with the UI. i hope it sounds like a decent idea and something that's not too big a pain to do. thanks either way.

Sprite priority sounds like a great idea. Do you have a mockup of what you have in mind? A picture of what happens at the moment and a mockup picture of how you prefer it to look would be great, and might help it getting fixed.

It might happen - but even if it does, it's not going to be anytime soon.

always sounds better than "i have zero interest in that."

as for the pictures, i'll still look into that just to reinforce my point.

the 'mockup.'

it's just a quick example. the forest scene should look basically like this

but without a definite priority, the fog goes underneath link and the other little sprites, like this

like that, there's no point.

yeah, yeah. sprites are done, plans are done, but my people aren't gonna go walking on top of fog and rain. if it's fixed, the skin's released....not sure where, though. i still don't like AXS, and the skin'll be well over their 3MB limit anyway.

[Edit]
the rain is actually doable now, since the ghost kid and his audience aren't too complicated...it's too long to explain, but this scene's done already

in this one, i didn't mess with any weather effects. it's just my third menu scene.

point is, the skin's been worked on and it's pretty much done.

FFVII? are you sure that was me? i was only barely thinking about that. my earthbound skin went too close to the memory limit (loads fine but background goes black when returning from a game), but i finished my final fantasy advance skin and one of my Legend of mana skins. back then, it hadn't occured to me to just recreate scenes into a gif file to show them off. i'll get to those in a few hours. they're all about 9 - 11 MB, but i'm no longer on dialup.

[Edit] i made these quite a while ago, but no one really has them besides my friends. i guess without pics to advertise them, it's hard to get much interest in them. they look SOMEthing like these (most are just photoshop recreations).

i'm not around too often, so i'd rather send to people who can host them somewhere. either way, if i am around, i don't mind sending them a few times if someone's interested. i know these skins are interchangeable between emulators, but i don't do that. if one doesn't work on a different emulator....can't help ya.

and even if the limit's been upped (x4), i still don't like that place. petty grudge, sorry. i'll find some way to do it. maybe someone'll step forward and help me out.

as for nes...i have a zelda 1 skin that's almost done. it's syled similarly. i just need to animate link in a certain scene. most skins that i do for nes are actually from snes games. why? why not?

What about Xbox-Skins.net? Would this place be ok, they are reasonable and nice. Probably both cute and hot at the same time. Try it please, i'd like to try your skins because they look very nice.

the three skins i've made for xport's emulators have been hosted thanks to thraxen's kindness. they may be found here: http://www.thraxen.com/skins/

of course, as i make more, they'll be sent right there. i hear there's more than enough room.
