Light Gun Help Needed Please
« on: July 24, 2004, 12:32:00 PM »

With the announcement of Xport's improvemnt of gun support in MAMEoX I rushed out today and picked up a Joytech Sharpshooter.  Now this calibrates fine in the MAMEoX menu but once I load a gun game I have a motionless crosshair and all I can do is shoot.  This has happened in all three gun games I have tried, Alien 3, Operation Wolf, and Point Blank.  Anyway I have mentioned this already in the new MAME thread assuming it was an issue with that emulator but since then I've found other emulators are proving problematic too.

xSNESx - I simply cannot calibrate the gun in this at all.  The emulator only registers the light gun in a *very* small area of the screen when I try to set it up.  Not suprisingly when I then run Yoshi's Safari (the only SNES gun game I have at the moment) nothing at all happens.

FCE - I can setthe gun up perfectly in the emulator menu but when I load Duck Hunt nothing happens at all, no crosshair or anything.

Although I have a 100hz TV I know that this gun works fine with it as I owned it once before last year along with House of the Dead 3.

Someone please help.  Thanks in advance.

ummmm sorry to burst your bubble but games like terminator 2 and operation wolf dont use lightguns...they actually use joysticks in the arcade machines thats why the guns are mounted to the arcade machine...cause the joystick is in there...

I already know that they are both 'joystick' games, although I never even mentioned Terminator 2 anyway.  Regardless your point is irrelevant as both games are supposed to have light gun support in MAME anyway, and Alien 3 and Point blank which I also mentioned are certainly both originally light gun games.

The lightgun needs to be in port #1.

I you're using a HDTV, then you're probably going to be out of luck.

The Pelican Lightrifle works fine in FCE in port 1 or 2. It used to work in th last version of mame (although not well of course). Now it calibrates fine, but jumps around in any game.

May I just ask those of you who have got their light gun working in MAME0X which gun you have?  Has anyone had a Joytech Sharpshooter working?

Going back to FCE, as I said it calibrates ok in the emulator menu but nothing happens in the game.  Have I missed out an option that turns the gun on when running the actual ROM?

For FCE, press X on the rom (duck hunt) and there is an option to turn on the zapper in port 1 or 2

Yes, point blank works, but not with my lightgun (pelican lightrifle) sad.gif

Many thanks, Duck Hunt works almost perfectly now.  The only slight niggle is the the start button and d-pad on the gun don't register in the game.  I need to have a joypad plugged in as well for that.  No big deal though, I'm much happier now this game works.

Did Operation Wolf for the NES have light gun support?  I know the original arcade machine actually used a joystick but I'm sure I played it as a light gun game on my Master System years ago

Now if I can just get xSNES9x and MAMEoX gun support working properly....

I managed to get the lightgun working with Operation Wolf in MAMEoX this evening.  I plugged the gun into port #1 (like Xport mentioned)  and a controller into port #2.  Using the controller, I selected the lightgun calibration menu item in MAMEoX before launching the game.  After calibrating, I started the ROM.  As soon as the ROM loaded up, there was a crosshair on the screen and it moved when I moved the lightgun.  I played a few rounds of Operation Wolf and then gave VS Duck Hunt a try as well.  Both worked fine.

/me runs off to try this out right now.

Thanks waggle.

Still the same I'm afraid.  It must be an issue with the Joytech Sharpshooter itself in MAMEoX and xSNES9X, unless anyone else with this gun has had it working?

Ah well, I have NES Duck Hunt and I have picked up House of the Dead 3 again so all is not lost.  When I get bored of these I'll just have to go back to Time Crisis 2 and 3, and Virtua Cop on PS2.

A home conversion of Virtua Cop 3 wouldn't go amiss now, are you listening Sega?

xSNES9X has know issues with that gun I think, same with the Pelican Light rifle. I think we both have to wait until our guns are supported sad.gif  Why did't I get 2 mad cat blasters and double wield in HOTD3?!

Ah well, that'll teach me for running out and buying the first gun I see without waiting for some other suckers to try it out first wink.gif

About the Pelican rifle, does it work on 100hz TVs, and as you have this do you have Silent Scope as well?  If so do you really have to turn the brightness up as much as I have heard for it to work in this game?

Xport please make it so you can use the lightgun in port#2

The reason I ask, is because I hacked my port#1 to be able to turn on/off my xbox from my controller. And when I did this, it said that control port 1 would not be able to use a lightgun. I'm sure there's plenty of other users in the same boat as I am. Please take this into consideration. Thank You.

Like I have already said in the Mameox thread......I also have two sharp shooter guns which work fine with House of the Dead but not with Mameox, Snes etc.

Hopefully Xport manages to get this gun to work fine because the majority of the emulators I like are made by him. If needed I will sent him one of the guns to make it work....no problem at all.

Let's hope this problem will be solved soon.

Thank you Xport for all the retro gaming time!
