File Names To Long...is There A Fix?
« on: June 18, 2004, 04:17:00 AM »

I was transfering over some SNES roms, Genesis roms, and also screen shots for them. And there are several roms that do not transfer over because the files names or two long....or it looks like they have a comma in there name? I would hate to go through and have to manually rename them all, plus have to rename the screenshots so they match up also......I remember seeing an application on the main page of XBScene, but I searched and couldn't locate it..........does anyone have a fix for this...sorry if its been asked before

thanx in advance

file names can't be longer than 42 characters and yes oddly shaped characters such as
< > / \ | : ; ' " , * = + etc......  and yes commas as i showed. this pissed me off the first time when i found out about the commas
and if you have a period (.) in it it won't display screenshots in the game select screen for some reason

if you want to rename your games get a tool like romcenter

Thanx for the info......but like I said...there was a program posted on Xbox Scene, that was suppose to allow for filenames longer than 42 characters. Does anyone remember this?

This page lists some utilities that can be used to automatically rename files for FATX compliance.

I personally just use the goodxxx rename dirs forcexbox swich, this way it generates all xbox compatible filenames for your roms.

That's an excellent idea... Cowering's Good utilities are awesome at what they do, and I've had issues with a few of the tools made specifically for renaming files for FATX compliance.

Now I feel like an idiot...I've been trying for so long now to transfer some ROMS onto my Xbox, and some wouldn't work (Super Mario RPG-Legend of the Seven Stars).  Now I know why.

BTW I found a program called baRenameX which is very similar to PreXboxcopy tool.  But one nice thing about it is it will "SHOW" which files are non-compliant (which PreXboxcopy does not), and also has a built in FTP program.

Pretty nice.

Got it off the above mentioned Xbox-scene page.
