Surreal64 Performance Settings Thread
« on: May 13, 2004, 03:14:00 AM »

Ok since a lot of people are asking about which setting s a game runs best with and not getting a response, I've started this topic.  To those of you that have games running beautifully under Surreal64 or as good as you can get them, please share you settings here.  I'm sure It will help out a lot of people  smile.gif.

Ok first off, what do some of these settings mean?  What is Dynarec memory?  Well over in the Official Surreal64 Help Thread, Iriez does an EXCELLENT job of explaining the proper way to fine tune your settings.  Keep in mind, though, that that thread is for helping people to get the emulator to work for them, not making games run as optimal as possible.

Also, through trial and error, I've found that UltraHLE DOES NOT support the Memory Pak.  Any game that requires a memory pack will say the memory pack is either damaged or not present when run under UltaHLE.

Last Updated September 9th, 2005

ALL GAMES ARE (U) (!) MEANING THEY ARE PERFECT AMERICAN RIPS UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED

ALSO THIS SETTINGS THREAD WILL BECOME OBSOLETE AS SOON AS I GET MY NEW HARDDRIVE!  I PLAN ON PUTTING A COMPLETE SET OF ROMS ON IT, SETTING UP ALL THE GAMES AND THEN POSTING MY INI FILE FOR OTHERS TO DOWNLOAD!

Well, here is my list of optimal settings and a description on how each game runs:

Blue=Runs near perfect or pretty good
Red=Runs but has some sort of problem

1080 Snowboarding
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 5mb Paging
Glitches so extremely minor I don't bother to post them.

AeroGauge
Emulator - Project 64
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Default settings make this game run excellent.

BattleTanx
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Videos can run kind of slow but gameplay seems alright.

Conker's Bad Fur Day
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 6mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
These settings seem to work best.  Gives you the impression conker has a beard.  Lags at some points but runs PLAYABLE throughout most of the game.

Cruis'n USA
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 12mb Dynarec, 6mb Paging
Runs very smoothly under this emulator.  Only problem is that there is an EXTREMELY MINOR glitch where balloons show up in the sparkles near a doorway.

Cruis'n World
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 5mb Paging
Runs and playable but a bit slow.

Diddy Kong Racing
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Same as Cruis'n World, runs a bit slow but still playable.

Doom 64
Emulator - UltraHLE
Settings - 10mb Video Memory
Runs almost perfect, but the controls are a bit too sensitive, but it's still playable.

Extreme-G
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Runs really good.

Forsaken 64
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Glitches so extremely minor I don't bother to post them.

F-Zero X
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Runs REALLY well but textures don't show up on cars.  Big deal, so you lose a little bit of eye candy.

Gex: Deep Cover Gecko
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Runs fine, just personally can't stand the controls...

Glover
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 6mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Runs excellent.  No glitches as far as I can see.

GoldenEye 007
Emulator - UltraHLE
Settings - 2mb Video Memory
The best way I've found so far to run this game.  Controls are WAY too sensitive but it runs fairly smooth.  As for texture glitches, the Train Depot's ground is some weird sort of blue and the black reflective glass is transparent.  Also, the Save Game select screen lags for some reason or another but once you select a game, it runs Ok.

Harvest Moon 64
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Runs perfect.

Jet Force Gemini
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 6mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Has a few glitches; most are minor but the most annoying one is the big black square that replaces your shadow  dry.gif.

Kirby 64 - The Crystal Shards
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
I'm going to have to make this blue because although most enemies are missing their textures, the game is still playable.

Mario Kart 64
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 6mb Paging
Runs great.

Mario Party 1
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 5mb Paging
Seems to run fine.

Mario Party 2
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 5mb Paging
Slight texture glitches here and their.

Mario Party 3
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 5mb Paging
Same settings as Mario Party 2, same minor problems biggrin.gif.

Mortal Combat Trilogy
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 3mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 5mb Paging
Game runs with full eye candy but I still can't get it to run at full speed.  Playable, but just a tad too slow.

Paper Mario
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 2mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
There are a few parts where you think it's freezing but it's loading.  There don't seem to be any serious glitches.

Rampage World Tour
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 6mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Runs excellent (but I mean come on, it's not very graphics intensive smile.gif).  The only issue this game has is that the music makes *popping* sounds from time to time.  No biggy really.

Rampage 2 - Universal Tour
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Runs perfect.

Rush 2 - Extreme Racing
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 5mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 5mb Paging
Runs very well but on the stunt track, some floor textures are missing.

San Francisco Rush
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Game runs EXCELLENT!  The only issue is that on the title screen, the graphics are SLIGHTLY messed up.

South Park
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Runs very well.  Don't forget to add Use Basic Audio=1 into the games entry in the Surreal.ini in your TDATA folder.

Star Fox 64
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 6mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
This game runs perfect.  I don't believe the N64 could have done a better job  biggrin.gif)

Super Mario 64
Emulator - UltraHLE
Settings - 10mb Video Memory
Runs Excellent on this emulator.  The only problem I've seen is that in the very beginning of the game when you can move mario face around, the textures don't show up.  NOTE:When getting the star "Pole Jumping For 8 Red Coins", sometimes the poles don't show up, leaving you with nothing to grab.  To fix this just turn off the Xbox and resume gameplay.

Super Smash Brothers
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 8mb Video Memory, 6mb Dynarec, 2mb Paging
I don't recommend messing with these settings as they are OPTIMAL.  Trust me, I spent some time getting the game to work this good.

Tetrisphere
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Runs fine.

The Legend Of Zelda - Majora's Mask
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 2mb Video Memory, 10mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
This game runs OK I guess but there are quite a few annoyances.  The biggest problem is it likes to slow down A LOT when loading a new area and you think it's about to freeze.  Also, you can't see what time of day it is by looking at the thing at the bottom of the screen.  Also, it has an issue where the last heart that you have doesn't show up.

The Legend Of Zelda - Ocarina Of Time
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Max Video, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
My god did this game take me forever to figure out that the default settings are the best!  You can take your Dynarec as high as 12 but I don't recommend it as you could run out of memory and have your box freeze.  The game run smooth, but there are a few textures that are messed up, especially some spiderwebs and lets just say Red Mountain looks actually kind of cool smile.gif.  This game also has the last heart not showing up issue.

Turok 2 - Seeds Of Evil
Emulator - Project 64
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 14mb Dynarec, 7mb Paging
Slight lag and sound doesn't sync up very good, probobly because the videos are on crack.  Don't forget to add Use Basic Audio=1 into the games entry in the Surreal.ini in your TDATA folder.

Turok 3 - Shadow Of Oblivion
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Same problems as Turok 2.  Don't forget to add Use Basic Audio=1 into the games entry in the Surreal.ini in your TDATA folder.

Quest 64
Emulator - Project 64
Settings - 6mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
This game runs excellent with these settings.  These are optimised and going any higher could be risky. biggrin.gif

Wave Race 64
Emulator - 1964
Settings - 4mb Video Memory, 8mb Dynarec, 4mb Paging
Game runs excellent on default settings.

From what I've read, the dashboard you use to launch Surreal64 affects the performance and optimum memory settings, so we'd all have to agree on a dashboard or be launching from the DVD from a cold boot to make the settings universal.

Thanks for pointing that out.  Although I'm not 100% sure of that myself, it sounds like it may actually be true.  Until someone can confirm this, just add the Dashboard you use into your *report*.

what is a good dash to launch from to use surreal64? I was using evox for almost a year, until recently, switching to unleashx.

I recall people w/ certain dashes having certain problems.  I thought it was an isolated case where the emulator just flat out didn't run.

Curious... I wonder if I switched my dash, would I have the issue I had where I can't finish Majora's Mask.

Well if the dash does make a diffrence, somebody who wants to run games efficiently should use a dash like Evox or THC Lite.  I'm currently using the latest UnleashX, which would surely take up a lot of memory.

I thought about the dashboard memory thing, doesnt it dump the dashboard memory off after you launch an xbe?

In any case, i will help with the performance thing im still tinkering with some of the settings.

Yeah, I believe the dash is no longer in memory after you load a new xbe, although I could be mistaken.  At any rate, I'm going to have my RAM upgraded to 128MB next week.  I'd like to add to the performance tuning settings; however, will you still be interested in my settings after the upgrade, or is this thread directed more towards 64MB Xboxes?

Well the problem is that after you put your 128mb ram in your box, you can max out your settings for every game and they'll all run fine smile.gif.  In other words, I don't think it will help too much, you know, listing every game with the maximum settings.  Wow, thanks, ill tryt those settings out when I get home  biggrin.gif .

Cathesdus don't you have a network card with a cat-5 cable to ftp stuff across. If you have an NForce mobo you can use that. Im on a dial-Up and im using that to ftp.

Would be a killer to have to open up yer xbox everytime you need to ftp. I know what using xlinux is like as well. I needed to have 2 cd's at hand when i screwed up an exploit with no modchip. That was really hell      :D

Would help you out with one

hi guys, 128mb ram is not the answer. my xbox has got 128mb and i swiched all settings to the highest but unfortuality many games wont load after that. for example conkers bad fury crashes if i use the highest settings. so somehow it is useless.

it may seem that way, but when you crank up the max video memory, must games glitch out and/or don't run.
