Strange - FW Dizzy works fine for me using the joypad.

Are you loading from a snapshot or tap file?

Snapshot, so it's probably my fault.  I'm not really that fussed as it's fine playing with the keyboard.  I'll take a proper look tonight at some games that I thought caused conflicts.  I think a couple of the Ultimate games like to crash a couple of times before starting, but again, these are .sna files...

Oh yes, I remember Fairlight, it was in EDGE last month.

I was just wondering where Carcharius and you other guys come from, is it the UK like me?

Was the Speccy well known in the USA?

Hitcher - and the game has NO SOUND. Can u believe that. It is funny what you forget!

Yeah, I'm here in the UK and I'm sure the rest of the world are wondering what we are all banging on about. This was really a UK phenomenon!

Any other faves. I thinkthe YS top 100 basically had it covered!

I doubt most Americans know what the Speccy is/was, think the nearest thing was a Timex-branded clone...

I'm going to try this baby out tonight but wondering a few things before I try it: -

1. Does the Xbox joypad count as a Kempston joystick or a sinclair joystick. Or does it work for both.

2. Does this version allow other xbox joypads to work so that 2 player games can be played?

3. Will inserting a new tape reset the game? I've used emu's before that reset the game when the tape has been removed. Will Gauntlet work if I try to turn the tape over?

4. For keyboard games can spare buttons on the joypad be mapped? E.g FaCup uses the letters A, B, C all through the game so would like to map the keys to A, B and Black. This would save time than using the onscreen keyboard.

But thanks for creating the emu, Its one I've been waiting for a long time. Can't wait!

Thanks

Tanas - it does.

Hitcher - yes I'm from the UK too.

My history with the speccy eh?

Well it all started with the plus 3 that I got back when they first came out. It succeeded a BBC Model B as the family computer.

I'd looked several times at porting a speccy emu to the xbox, but I never really found one I felt happy about porting. Then a few weeks ago I was chatting with MHz about how he got started with Kawaks.

That got me wondering whether I could write my own emu. After thinking about which machines I knew well and which weren't emulated yet I settled on the speccy. So I started reading up all the technical docs on the speccy I could find, and started tinkering with some code.

A few weeks later SpeXtrum is the result.

Antiriad,

you're not too late at all.

I'd be very interested to see your ideas - who knows it might even lead to some skinning support making it into a future version!

I'd not worry too much about putting together a list, other than to try to locate obvious faults in the emulator that would help Carch locate bugs and other issues...  I presume this would be the best way forward?

If any snapshot was taken on a Spectrum/emulator that didn't have Kempston
support activated, then that snapshot is loaded into a Spectrum/emulator with
Kempston activated, then that game will become "confused", as in effect port 31
(if I remember rightly) has suddenly become active (i.e. it returns other than 255),
when it should still be returning 255. For this reason, most emulators have Kempston turned off by default.

I presumt this is the explanation for the Dizzy game and others. Hope that helps.

Again I can't believe I'm playing a Speccy on my XBox - it's wonderful. My Speccy was my first love  love.gif (computerwise) followed by my Amiga. I even did a little crappy fanzine once and had the pleasure of interviewing a few Speccy celebs. Don Priestly, the author of Trap Door, is without doubt the nicest person in the world. I'll have a look to see if I can find any copies and put them on the web.

[Not directed ant anyone other than myself]

I'm an impatient bastard and I can't wait for the next version with folder support and redefinable controls. Also save states would be lovely.

Thanks for your work so far Carcharius. It's like the start of a wonderful trip back into time. Take all the time you need to get this just right. Unless it;s more than a couple of days...

[irony - wonderful, no?]

On another note - I think I have fixed some of the input issues mentioned (not all yet).

So hopefully the compatibility will improve in the next version.
