QUOTE (TheBoyEclectic @ Feb 25 2004, 10:52 PM)
Only 5?!?! Ouch!

Let's see...

5. Galaga
I have always been a big shooter fan. Everything from the old school classics like Space Invaders, Defender, Zaxxon, Vangard, R-Type, Darius, and Gradius to the more modern incarnations including Donpachi, Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga. I loved the Panzer Dragoon series and ate up Gamera 2000, R-Type Delta, Einhander, Omega Boost, ZoE 1 & 2, and so many more. However, there is something timeless about Galaga. The vertical scroller is a pure art and the challenge of Galaga combined with the ability to double your firepower with two ships is gaming brilliance.

4. Asteroids
Atari gave us the first opportunity to save our initials for bragging rights with this classic. Though the premise is simple, its gameplay still holds solid today. Razor-sharp graphics and the never-ending onslaught of rocks spinning through space. For those of you with a Vectrex, John Dondzila's Rockaroids Deluxe is the best home version of Asteroids ever made!

3. Joust
What a great game to share with a friend! Granted, Space Wars, Armor Attack!, and Atari's original Tank were great two player games. But there was something really special about Joust. I know some friends who would put Gauntlet and Track & Field over this for multi-player, but I will always have extraordinary memories with this one. It's still a great title to share with a friend more than 20 years later.

2. Battlezone
This is the original first-person-shooter in all of its vector graphic glory. The mood and tension are unparalleled and in spite of the primative graphics, it holds up quite well against the fully-rendered titles of today. Spectre, released on the SNES and the Mac back in the 90s, tried to recapture some of what Battlezone had. Though the multi-player component of the newer product was fun, it owed it all to the original. I take great pride in the fact that I modified the control scheme on MameoX in order to use the Xbox analog joysticks like the arcade sticks and the right trigger button to fire. Ahh....gaming bliss!

1. Tempest
Sadly, this classic will never play right without a properly-weighted spinner control. I hope to create an arcade cabinet someday and to incorporate a spinner just to play this and Discs of Tron. What can be said about Tempest? It's a visceral experience. The sensation of having used your last Superzapper and quickly being surrounded by enemies is enough to make your skin crawl. However, the sound effects and the sheer bliss of clearing a level make this one a true classic.

Other Suggestions
In addition to titles already mentioned above (and within the descriptions) I heartily reccommend classics like Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Star Wars, Star Trek, Pac Man, Pong, Golden Axe, Ghosts-n-Goblins, Xevious, Space Fury, Star Castle, Eliminator, Spy Hunter, Phoenix, Berzerk, Warlords, Q*Bert, Missle Command, Frogger, Centipede, Marble Madness, Bust-A-Move, and Metal Slug.

Have FUN! beerchug.gif

Disclaimer:I'm specifcally not listing pre-NES games, simply for the fact that if I played the MAME versions, my Atari VCS/2600 and Intellivisions would become redundant. Don't think I don't know about the classics of yesteryear! jester.gif

--------------
In no particular order:

Metal Slug (series, but especially the original:) The game I bought the NGPC for is one of my all-time favourite shooters.

The King of Fighters (series, but especially `98:)  The SF-killing series' strength was trying every character to find the one best suited to your game. Once you've made your choice, you could then beat on a friend in a variety of hand-drawn, sprite-animated locales. Oh baby!

King of the Monsters 1: There's nothing like destroying a Japanese city with a radioactive monster, unless you can embarass a friend while you're at it.

Super Sprint: One of the best racers of all time. Think about it - multiplayer, vehicle upgrades, tight control, slick graphics and interesting tracks.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: As a child of the 80s, the heroes in a half shell hold a special place in my heart. This game was, at the time, one of the few licensed games that had some resemblance to the original product. Besides, it was fun and that's the most important thing.
--------------

Curse you for making us choose only five games, as there are hundreds more I'd like to vote for. Perhaps I'm even forgetting some that might knock these bad boys out of rank.

Cheyenne - No one said this either yet...?
X-MEN - the 6 player double-screen version..wow
Operation Wolf - Classic.  Just classic.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - 4-5 years later, and I still play this almost every day, and will continue until I die.
