Mario Party Fantics
« on: January 14, 2004, 12:13:00 AM »

I'm sure there must be a few Mario Party fanatics amongst us. Since I got Surreal64 1.0 I've played Mario Party 3 with 3 other people 4 times and everytime it's crashed after about 90 minutes (Which is amazing for any emulator to be stable for that long) I've tried both sound plugins in 1964 and Pj64 but have not touched the memory settings yet. I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same problem and more over if someone has it working for a full couple of hour game. I'm finding it harder to convince my friends (who don't really get emulators) to keep playing the game with me. Saving states every 5 minutes is going to put them off even more.

If the emulators made a backup save state every minute this would probably solve my problem.

Can you turn the rumble pack switching off because constantly you see player 1/2/3/4 inserting rumblepack/mempak I'm just glad it doesn't use the C buttons otherwise I'd have people saving and loading state mid games.

I'm almost there and it's impressive I've got people who hate old games and don't understand emulators to play an emulated game, a testament to both Nintendo and the authors/porters.

EDIT:: Thought I should add a few things

I'm using
Mario Party 3 (U) [!].zip
1.1 Xbox, M7 with Evox latest version.
Does any of the other versions work better or maybe Mario Party 1 or 2

For any one wondering the game itself runs very well, no sound skips with the HLE audio plugin and only skips in some mini games with pj64 audio plugin. The odd flicker (nothing really noticable) and a couple of mini games have graphic issues (Most are perfect) but every game played fine and the experience was as close to an N64 as I've got playing Mario Party.

Can't say I have seen this problem.  I have played MP1 and 3 for three or four hours a couple of times using Surreal. Have you checked any other game for a couple of hours?  Maybe your xbox is getting too hot?  Can you play single player MP3 for two to three hours?

I had similar problems with Mario Party 2 & 3.  Is your game locking up while the characters are on the board or during mini games.  For me, it was during the board and whenever special things happend on the board that had animations that moved your player from one space to another.  To fix that problem, I played with the memory settings in 1964, and now it hasn't locked up on me since.  A good test on Mario Party 2 is on the Space World map, try to land on a ? mark on the beginning.  Using the default settings, it would always crash when that block thing made everyone move back, but once I changed the memory settings it worked fine.  I'm currently at work away from my xbox, but I will provide you with my exact settings later.

That's exactly the problem playing a game now with another 10meg dynrec and 7meg vid are you using azimer or pj64 rsp?

You shouldnt need so much video mem.

Theres very few games that need more than 4MB of memory...like SSB. Keep your video mem at 3 or 4 mb, and increase your dyna mem.

If you want to troubleshoot a freezing even though there is enough mem, drop the paging and up the dyna. Conkers, for example, will freeze after the intro scene (right before you start playing) if the dyna is not set at atleast 9MB or above in some cases (evox) even though there is enough free memory.

XmarksTheSpizot, can you tell us the exact settings you use and which rom and Emulator you use to run Mario Party 2 and 3.

I can seem to play Mario Party 3 U version perfect on default settings and hasn't locked up once for me. But Mario Party 2 is a different story.

And it's a bit hard to just trial on error on this game becuase it takes so long to set up, and can sometimes just freeze pretty far into the game which can get annoying.

So if there are certain settings to use, could you post what you use please smile.gif

The only definite freeze problem I get with Mario Party 3 is during the desert stage with the mirage stars: whenever someone lands on the '?' space (which transports you to another place) on the southern-most loop a quicksand animation crashes the emu. Mario Party 2 crashes on default settings a few minutes into the game.

evox
surreal 1.0
default settings

can someone explain to me if launching in the following order frees up more memory for surreal?

evox -> unleashx -> surreal OR
evox -> boxplorer -> surreal

or is there a way to launch surreal with more memory while still retaining evox? and to pre-empt the inevitable q, I have an unflashable mod and that's why I can't change to a bios with IGR.

Of course you can, and its called Phoenix bios loader.

My suggestion is to ditch evox and go with either unleashx, avalaunch, or a hacked ms dash.

The reason is because evox patches the kernel, and while for all its features its incredibly stable, theres bound to be issues, seen or unseen.

Baby bump smile.gif

Just curious as to if anyone has found the magic dyna for MP 2. I've had 0 problems with 3 so far. I'd do some hardcore testing but I'm at work for a while sad.gif

I tried with avalaunch (My dash of choice if I hadn't had problems with Xecuter bios's) and it still crashed but with extra mem for dyn rec it played fine only one 3 1/2 session so far but fingers crossed. It'd be nice if when memory started to run out it saved state may be reset the emulator and loaded state again.

If anyone has problems with specific maps on mario party we should post them here so we can avoid bad maps, nothing worse than 2 hours in and the game crashes and won't go any further.

I have been playing MP3 a lot with my girlfriend and WAY over 1.5 hours. And still stable. I don't know if the number of players has anything to do with it, but still....

Just wanted to let you know.

Thanks XmarksTheSpizot for that. I just played one game of Mario Party 2 then with my little brother, and we made it through the whole game without locking up. So that seems to have done the trick thanks.

Just one thing, how can I save those settings for that rom so everytime it loads up that game, I won't have to remember to change it all the time.

When you select the rom and it comes up with the emu selection screen 1964,pj64 & ultraxle at the bottom you can configure rom specific settings it seems to save it on mine.
