Lunar Sega Cd On Neogenesis V15
« on: January 04, 2004, 05:06:00 PM »

I used cddissect v1.2 to prepare the lunar:silver star story sega cd image, and it extracted two file: a lunar01.iso easy cd creator image file (1084 kb), and a lunar.cue file (4 kb).  Anyway, the sega cd logo and sonic boot (show up) fine, as does the beginning tile screen of lunar.  But when it gets to the black screen that says: "External Ram cart has not been formatted yet.  Okay to format it?  Cool!, or No way!"  Then after choosing either one, it says "press start".  The screen then just hangs (stuck) here, but it does not freeze the xbox; i can exit the rom via the emu and get back to the emu's main menu, but cannot go back or foward in the lunar game.

Also, i would like to note that playing lunar directly from off the original cd on neogenesis works perfectly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Foe-

Have you tried toggling the Perfect CD Syncho option? What version of NeoGenesis are you using?

Is the "perfect cd syncho option" under CD method: Perfect Synchro or Normal?  I've tried both and nither make any difference.

Also, i would like to note that playing lunar directly from off the original cd on neogenesis works perfectly.

Thanks for the replys, GaijinPunch.  But i still can't figure it out.

Has anyone successfully ran sega cd's lunar:silver star story from off the hdd via xbox emu's?

Which Lunar is this?  Silver Star Story or Eternal Blue?  (I think SSS was just callled Lunar in the US, but can't recall).   I own both of their Japanese counterparts, but have yet to try.

I also recall reading somewhere that there was a bunk MP3 set floating around the net at one point.  If you didn't rip them from your SegaCD that works perfectly, then sort out your ASPI problem from your other thread and try an MP3/ISO set from that source.  That's my best, and only solution at dis point in time.

Thanks

It's the first lunar, the silver star story for the sega cd.  I'm extracting it from the original cd.

Also, i have used cdrwin to extract sega cd's lunar: silver star story, and another program to make the audio files mp3's.  I still had the same problem with it hanging at the same place; at the external RAM formatting option.

I saved a couple save states from off the original sega lunar cd; playing directly off the cd, and then renamed them to what my extracted files of lunar on my hardrive recognized as it's save states.  I then started up the lunar from off the hdd, and loaded up the save states, and it worked; music control and everything, but when the next scene loaded it got hung up again; couldn't move the character or progress any further in the game.  The emu did not freeze up though, and i was able to exit the game.  This leads me to believe there is something wrong with the emu stringing together the different files when the segacd lunar: silver star story is extracted to the hdd.

Your filenames are probably not named correctly.

Should be

lunar.iso
lunar02.mp3
lunar03.mp3

etc

They are named all correctly as you stated.  I got past the formatting external rom screen, where it used to hang, but it now hangs at the beginning where alex is standing in front of the grave, his legs are still moving, but can't progress any futher in the game.  I remembered someone else having the exact same problem as i'm having now, and posted a more detailed reply there.  The only difference is i extracted all the files from off the original cd, and have all the files.

You're absolutely sure your filenames are correct?  The above quote from you is what prompted me to have you check your filenames.  If you're not hearing any MP3 music at all, then your filenames are probably not correct.

Also - have you tried manually listening to the MP3 files to make sure they're valid?

I'm positive that the file names are correct.  I was able to I extract all 51 lunar songs, and they work perfectly when listened to seperately in mp3 format.  I extrated all the files directly off from the original sega lunar cd.  I set up the files exactly like you said: lunar.iso, lunar02.mp3, lunar03.mp3, . . . . . . . lunar52.mp3.

Music works fine; worked fine with using cddissect, and also using alcohol 120%>fireburner>musicmatch jukebox (to convert the wave files to mp3).  I used cd dissect to extract two other of my sega cd games and it worked without a hitch.  But it did not work so well for lunar; hanged up at the external rom format screen.  With using the other method for extracting (alcohol 120%>fireburner>music match jukebox) i was able to get past the external rom format screen and start up the game, only to get hung up at the part where alex is standing by the grave, marching in place.  The following screen should have Nall (the flying small dragon cat looking thing) speaking to you in voice saying: "alex, oh alex!  There you are alex, i've been looking all over for you. etc".  Followed by a closeup box of Null speaking to alex.

The original sega cd lunar: silver star work perfectly when run off the disc with neogenesis.

So, you got me, i have no idea what is wrong.  Any other suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks again,

Update:

I figured out my problem.  Having two xbox's handy i opened up the sega cd dashboard on both systems via neogenesis, and compared the tracks of lunar songs off the hdd, with the ones off the original sega cd.  Song number 36 in lunar, on my hdd that i extracted, was different then what song number 36 was on the original sega cd.  After fixing this i was able to play lunar with out anything hanging up.

But.........I have another problem.  The tracks that i extracted from off the original lunar sega cd all have about a 2 sec. delay before any music is heard, when i press play to play the song off of the original lunar cd, the music starts up immediately.  This effects the game, because since there is a delay in the music and speech, they don't match up with what is going on in the game to well.

I used cdrwin to extract the files into .bin and .cue (I had to check "auto" or "disable" the "subcode analyisis", instead of selecting "full", like sanafan's tutorial said, because my cd rom would accept it, if that could have anything to do with it.  I then used fireburner to extract the wave file from the .cue.  Then to make them into mp3's i used music match jukebox at 192kbs.

Edit: just used alcohol 120%, but now the mp3 music and voices start too soon; first sec or two of the song is cut.  And some of the music that is supposed to be on lunar04.mp3 start at the end of lunar03.mp3, for example.

Anyone have any ideas, or other programs that would work better?

Thanks again,
Foe-

Conclusion:

1) cddissect is the best, most convenient way for extracting most sega cd's.  BUT IT DOES NOT WORK FOR LUNAR: SILVER STAR.  I used xport cddissect for all my other sega cd's, and it worked flawlessly.  Lunar just hangings in the "external rom formatting" screen, when cddissect is used to extract the files.

2) Only cdrwin worked to extract lunar: silver star.  But........, you must DISABLE "RAW" underneath the reading options.  If you do not disable "raw", then all the music and voices will have about a 2 sec delay before they start.  This makes all the sound, music and voices out of sync with what is going on in the game.
