Beginners Guide To Xbox Emulation
« on: January 01, 2004, 03:19:00 PM »

thanks alot for writing this Zyyke!  i just got another question for you though.

In part 5 you wrote the following...

QUOTE
Step 5: deciding on a method for transferring files.
If you are familiar with the capabilities of your modified xbox, this should not be a mystery to you. But if you are not, then here’s a quick walkthrough. To transfer files to your xbox, you have two options:
1. Connect your xbox to your pc by network or crossover cable, and FTP files over to your HD. For more information on how to set up your xbox for FTP connection, please refer to these tutorials.
On the PC side, you’ll need an FTP program. There are a lot of different programs out there, some free and some not. For a selection of freeware FTP clients, see NONAGS freeware archive, or use you favourite FTP client.
2. Burn files on CD-RW or DVD, and use boXplorer (or other xbox file manager) to copy content to your HD. To read more see here and here.

So if i put all the ROMS on a CDRW or DVD, i can just put it in (and if the xbox reads it) i can just copy them to the F partion?  would i do that the same way i put games on the HD?  it doesnt sound like it would make sense.

your help will be greatly appreciated (and i'll probably have a few more questions based on what you tell me).  thanks

It's best to FTP them, BUT if you're hellbent on using CDs/DVDs then make an XISO (using SimpleXIso) of all the ROM images, burn that XISO to a CD/DVD. Then fire up BoXplorer (or Avalaunch - or any other Xbox file explorer) and copy from D: to wherever you want the files to be.

Of course, with XPort's recent updates to his suite of emulators, you can (apparently, I haven't personally witnessed this yet) use a standard ISO9660 (i.e. a data CD that your computer will still read). So unless you're specifically after N64/Atari Lynx/Commodore Amiga emulation you could try that!

thanks evilnick.  i was just wondering how it would work burning the cds.  i'm pretty sure im gonna end up FTPing them.   i got another question that i just thought of...

when i browse the folders on the xbox (from FTP) where is the best spot for the emus?  i noticed last night in XBMP that it has a spot for emus and games but on the main evox screen it has a spot that says 'self installed emulators'.  if i put them on the main screen, will i still be able to access them from XBMP or just one or the other? this is what im looking for...

Something that people have problems with quite often: there is a limit to the # of files you can place in a folder.
From MS:
QUOTE
The maximum number of files and subdirectories per directory is 4,096. However, any directory with more than 768 files is going to give slower file access than a directory with 768 files or less, due to the technique that the Xbox file system uses to store directory listings. Additionally, directories are not sorted, so it requires an O(n) search to find and open a file. The more files in a directory, the longer it takes to open a file in that directory.

FAO: Zyyke or anyone else who might be able to help...

This has got to be a crazy first post I am about to make, but at least I am getting straight to the point...

Ok then, the topic is Emulators for Xbox...

Also yes I do read things as I know you can only download these through 'mIRC' now, but all of the recommended servers from people over various websites and forums to do with Xbox emulation are all seemingly no longer working or in use, as when I enter these rooms, I am the only one there, and no of the commands work to get lists etc (ie: '!list').

I was just wondering if someone could post a 'here' link to a web page that is up to date and still works, or even a 'here' link to the name of a server that still works, for example:

'#xboxemuthatworks'

...Along those lines anyhow would be very appreciated! Thank you...

PS: I may post this message again elsewhere if I don't see any replies within the next few days...

Thankyou for your time!  biggrin.gif

Ok thanks for that Iriez, but I finally got it working after some playing around with the program. I've downloaded various bits and pieces now for emulation...

All I need to do now is to buy an Xbox ModChip... Any advice on what to use? As long as it will work properly then I don't care what it is! I guess it's all down to various opinions people give about certain ModChips.

I still have no clue in how they will work once set up and also how I transfer my files on my PC I just got to my Xbox etc... I have an Action Replay USB port where I can download Saved games off the internet and then transfer back onto my Xbox that way... LOL though, it's all I know about it...

I'm guessing that I'll need various other bits and pieces cable wize in transfering these little files back and forth or whatever from my Xbox to my PC and of course Vice Versa!

I only want to play classic games like Streets of Rage 2 on Gens and Speedball 2 on UAE and such like that on my Xbox with my nice 28" big screen TV I have in my room with a mate using Xbox control pads (or maybe Playstation, Dreamcast or Saturn control pads of which I haven't decided on yet! lol).

Anyways you get the picture... this forum is so big Iriez, could you post a link to a topic that describes my most essential needs right now? That being "What ModChip to buy and then how to set it up and make it work with the emulators and roms etc..." you get the drfit! Cheers mate! I'll look forward to a reply from you very soon!

Thanks again!  biggrin.gif

The bios that you use determines how software runs. A modchip is simply a hardware means to getting your hacked bios running on the xbox.

So to answer the question, any modchip will suite your needs  (so long as its flash upgradeable)

Here are two tutorials to read up on networking your xbox to your pc.

Right ok, I've looked around various websites for what "Flash Upgradeable" ModChip to buy, and I'm still left wondering what I could possibly get by means of the easiest installation possible, preferably something you can just plug and play into your xbox without having to own a soldering iron and loads of other garbage like that!

Only back in high school I touched one of those and even then I wasn't the best at using one, so as a final question:

Any "Non-Solder Flash Upgradeable Xbox Modchip" will do me fine!

I've had my eyes on the "No Solder Xecuter 2.3B Lite Plus" as probably being the best out there for myself to purchase.

If you could Iriez, please check out the following link below and read the brief details about it so I can just make sure that this really could be just the one I am looking for.

http://www.divineo.co.uk/cgi-bin/div-uk/xb-x23lp

If so, from there I will probably purchase this and then take a deeper look into the 2 useful guides you gave me links for, so I can then gather up the various peripherals needed to start myself up on Xbox Emulation etc and then continue to learn even more from there.

Also, one more thing I noticed at the bottom of the link, there's another link to this website below:

http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/

This has information on running Linux on an Xbox without a Modchip and other information about using it as a proper PC etc without mouse and keyboard blah blah blah, if that's right, then how much can Linux actually do for me?

If I could run good working Emulators and Roms on my Xbox without a Modchip installed on my Xbox, then there'd be no point in me even buying a Modchip would there? Unless there's some catch, or even plain and simply... "YOU CAN'T!"

I'm just curious, but it would be useful to know!

Thanks once more! :D

Man, this was extremely helpful. Although i'm still looking for emulators to install on one of my 2 Xboxes, I now know to keep my mouth shut about this subject. There is  money however, that 'll pay the person who, "hooks me up."

My Xbox:
200 GB WD HDD
4977 Bios
On/off switch
Soon to be painted...green/white.

My other Xbox:
Just the regular joe.

I dont need monopoly money.

Go to the front page of xbox-scene.com and click on tutorials. Then click the 'other' section about a 'guide to xbins'. Follow it.

I just have two things on my mind:

1. No matter how exciting the subject of modchip selection and linux-on-xbox is, the fact is that this is the beginners guide to emulation. Cooter34 - your questions are probably better answered in newbie chat.

2. Anyone reading the guide - or other tutorials pointed out by Iriez - will know that xbins is the way to go. The information is freely available, and you don't have to bribe anyone to get it.

I'd like to ask something - Can I use the 007AUF gamesave on my unmodded XBOX to access the emulators? I normally use the exploit to enable FTP from my PC to the XBOX, so I was wondering if it was possible to FTP the emulator and the games to the HD and play them through there.....

Any and All help is greatly appreciated.
