I was wondering if there was a limit on how many songs to put on your xbox for Stepmania-x ... I have about 850, but if I add more, I crash everytime I start it up.

I did... I have gathered them over a period of about 8 months... I tried adding another folder to it today and now after it caches the files and I select the folder I want to use, it freezes and goes back to the dash.

Ladies and Gents,

It is with some pleasure that I announce you that Katze, author of KatzeExtreme, has succesfully ported MOST OF his DDR Extreme-alike skin to StepmaniaX v5. Still not working is the Difficulty screen - partially, and because of file names a tad too long for the Xbox File System (oh to hell with that FS!!!) - and the song failed screen - usually you see two "doors" closing, but the bug is they open again.

There will be some screenshots in not too long proving that. I warn you, they're going to be ugly, I only have a TV Wonder VE.

There ain't a release mainly because of HELL-LONG filenames. Including the fscking dot, the filenames are at a maximum of 42 characters long. so, the name itself must be <= 38 chars. ScreenSelectMaster preview part1 choice4 p1 = 43 chars. Katze has more than one of them.

That is a bug to be solved. We're thinking hard on that one. We'll think of something.

... i hope... :-D

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

With some fear-generated sweat but GREAT PLEASURE, I am here to announce you this : We have finally made a working, close-to-PC version of the KatzeExtreme Stepmania Theme for the Xbox.

But it is not a "normal" one. It required hexadecimal editing in order to remap the filenames of the files to open.

I have asked XBins for hosting, and we are in the final way to provide you people with a working version of StepmaniaX v5 along with KatzeExtreme as the default theme. I shall soon make a hex patch for the executable.

Meanwhile, check the readme i wrote - it's for the full package.

------------------------------------------

This version of StepmaniaX v5 brought to you by Katze and Cybik

*******************************************************************

Many thanks go to:

XPort ( http://xport.xbox-scene.com ) for successfully having
   ported Stepmania to the Xbox
The Stepmania Project ( http://www.stepmania.com ) for having
   conceived this resourceful DDR simulator
The whole scene, without which none of this Xbox customizing
   would be possible
MS, for having made an uttermost powerful beast of
   gaming
MS again, for having made it so easy to hack with
   software security holes
Katze (co-author) for having conceived the KatzeExtreme theme
and backport it to Alpha7 for compilance with the Xbox
Cybik (co-author) for hexing into the XBE and cut out some filename
crap to get it to load up files with shorter filenames

And any soul worth of being mentioned in the afromentioned
who has - in practical - contributed to the package.

*******************************************************************

This package contains :

- StepmaniaX v5 (Stepmania >3 - Alpha 7 build ported to Xbox)
of which the default.xbe has been hex-edited
- the KatzeExtreme Stepmania Theme, with shorter filenames
breaking any compatibility with PC versions of Stepmania
- An edited GamePrefs.ini putting the KatzeExtreme theme as
   the default theme
- Music Sample : Hikari - Kingdom Hearts Theme, JAP version

NOTES :

- You should be advised that this build MAY (well, i'm pretty
darn sure of it) have alternative keymappings that
put the "A" button as a confirmation (start) button,
and "B" as a cancellation (cancel) button. Thus,
you cannot use them as up-left and up-right arrows
without having a keyboard plugged in to re-map the
   key mappings.
- THIS IS ONLY A TEST PACKAGE. The hex edition might give
unhappy results (as fscking your box or getting Jesus
to take you personaly to heavens - if you are religious),
and the theme itself is not of "final quality". As such,
you may not be satisfied with the quality of this package.
Cybik says : Dang, you should be, you have a green cool
skin for your green cool Xbox!!!

**********************************************************
BOTTOM LINE :

I personnaly (jsrlepage) want to apologize to XPort for a remark made prior to this modification. As a programmer, I should have remembered how a hassle it can be to analyse code and successfuly having something complying with all Xbox FatX standards.

I am very sorry for the little misplaced comment... I by no means want to discredit XPort.

QUOTE
A little less XPort for having forgotten that FatX only supports
38-character filenames (excluding the dot and the extension)

It's nice that you also thanked me immediately prior to the above comment, but I must admit I'm a bit offended by it.  I spent a lot of time and injected many changes into the Stepmania CVS tree to work around various FATX limitations.  I did not "forget" about it at all.  There are undoubtedly some places that I overlooked because I was not about to test every possible permutation of customizations.  I was more interested in getting the standard installation to work.  Most people don't really care about skinning or adding themes to Stepmania.

I said "most people."  If it were possible to ask everybody who currently runs StepmaniaX if they are interested in skinning it, I think you'll find that most people just want something that works OOTB and don't really want to futz around with themes.

I'm not interested in debating that subject, however, because it is not relevant to the issue at hand.  My point is that I feel jsrlepage's remark was unfounded, untrue,  and unnecessary.

Edited. I'm very sorry...

I did not want to insult anybody. It was a comment - and it ain't your fault, you comply with StepMania standards.
