/me weeps at the mention of Gamefan magazine. man, the gaming mag biz will never be the same without those guys. Hell, i dont even buy gaming mags anymore :/ BTW, cant wait for this emu. looks fantastic.

Amen to that brother...

I miss those days, I mean I ACTUALLY looked forward to going in to work then! Wanting to see what loots we got from Japan, and what Nick and Casey were hatching up next...

Oh well, the stories from that place could make one heckuva good book.

Gaming mags ain't the same anymore, but if you're looking to keep up with some of the old Staff from Gamefan, have a look at Play Magazine. It's by Dave Halverson, the same bloke behind Gamefan, Megafan, and Gamers' Republic. It's more of a Rollingstone/Paper style of magazine with gaming in mind. It's still not like the old days, but at least you can get a wiff of the new flavor these guys are dishing out.

I work with Dave every now and then, I don't think I'll end up at Play with him, the mag business is rocky at best, but I have been asked to revamp their website tongue.gif

Long Live Gamefan!!!

You might want to look into Edge. It's a British publication - professional journalism second to none and it covers industry topics other magazines wouldn't even consider. Also the retro features are great as of late.

Oh man you worked for Gamefan? That's awesome, prolly to only good gaming magazine ever to be published. They were also the only magazine, as I remember it that did import reviews. Awesome stuff. I dont remember a Mr. Goo I must say, but I do remember one jackass named ECM. One question though why didn't Gamefan ever release a final issue? They just released that issue back in nov. of 2000 I think (I've still got it somewhere), I waited for next months and there was nothing then I found out on their site they were calling it quits. Anyway its cool to see that these guys are still active. Best of Luck.

Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one that hated ECM... I had to work with that guy, and well, after I confronted him on how he weasled his way into the company, he cut me off and things spiraled downwards between us horribly. We divided into two factions, the Designers, and the Writers. Although I too wrote, I was still considered a Designer, and was in charge of the art dept, while he was head of the writing staff. Now, mind you, this all happened after Dave left and started Gamers' Republic.

Anyhow, after E3 in atlanta, I talked to Dave and pretty much set in stone the move over to their new mag. Having caught wind of it, ECM made a batch of koolaid to feed to the upper management and the rest of his croanies. Sooo.... Gamefan closes up shop, relocates and is now under the Shinno Media label. During the transition, ECM got together with the writers and upper management and drew up a list of who would be making the move to the new building. It comes as no suprise I wasn't included... No matter, I was on my way to Gamers' Republic anyway.

So anyway, they lost investors after the Eidos deal went bust and slowly vanished. They never released their final issue because they had no money to print it. Any monies available went into promoting Game-Go, ECM's attempt at rivaling Gamers' Republic. Well, needless to say, that venture failed, and as a last hurrah, ECM told everyone who had ever helped him to basically go f*ck themselves. This included his readership, his friends, and business partners. He said he was getting out of the game industry for good, and I have to say to that is, we're glad he's gone.

His reviews were crap, always harking back to the days of old when he could win at games which he considered great, like Toki... He was crap at street fighter, which pretty much dictates your standing as a human being amongst the Gamefan Staff, and he always had an unwaivering jealosy for Dave Halverson's avatar, E.Storm. He complained and whined as to why only E.Storm could have a weapon (Katana), and that other mascotts couldn't. Hey, it was Dave's mag, and if he wanted to be the tough guy in the roster, that's his call.  Anyhow, once Dave exited the magazine, guess who commisioned Terry Wolfinger to make a new ECM holding a warhammer? Blah... The poor short troll coudln't even think up an original nickname, ECM are his fricken initials... If you could imagine a short bearded New Yorker in an Islanders jersey and a baseball cap, with a pich of small man's complex and was just angry at the world, then you could invision what ECM looked like.

---

Edge is okay, a little bland, and if I'm not mistaken, it's US counterpart NextGen is now a distant memory. The problem with Edge is that it tries too hard to take sides, like putting mario on it's cover, then slapping it down in the review text. Stuff like that just doesn't make sense to American readers like me I guess.

---

Gamefan was the first magazine to bring Import Gaming to the US shores. In truth, the magazine started as a catalog for the new games Die Hard Gamer's Club would be selling for the month. The salespeople wrote reviews on the games, and even did little layouts. Those of you who are SuperFans will have the very first issue of Gamefan which is the size of a TV Guide, and was to be packaged in EGM. Anyhow, it blossomed into a magazine once more investors got on board, and the rest is history, literally.

Oh, the reason we could make any game look so good was because we were the only company taking direct RGB shots from the games. We had modified consoles which gave us direct RGB feeds into our "Color Snap" capture card for our Macs. Color Snap went out of business, so we paid thousands of dollars to acquire as many as we could. We had a total of about 4, and a couple of those are still in use today. They were used throughout all of Gamers' Republic, and are no doubt being used on Play Magazine.

Well, enough memories for now. It's nice to hear from readers, and I'd love to go on and on about Gamefan, but sadly, this thread isn't the right area for it.

If you've got any questions, send me a PM, or ask me a question in an off topic forum, I'd be happy to tell you anything, just to keep the Gamefan memory alive wink.gif

wink.gif). I must say the only issue that I have left is the Power Stone issue, that cover alone (and the review) persuaded me to purchase that over Soul Calibur, and yes I still like Power Stone better, not Power Stone 2 mind you (which is complete crap). Anyway its awesome to talk with you, I am honored ;)you guys did a great job with the art, coverdesign, and overall layout (only magazine with reviews in the front).  I have yet to see another quality magazine, EGM is completely biased and dislike anygame thats not endorsed by sony.

GameFan owns.  biggrin.gif

Gamefan mag..............ahh, the memories.  I too could talk about gamefan all day long.  The editors (writers) must have had magic in their fingers.  They had so much enthusiasm for the games they reviewed.  They enjoyed video games just as much as i did, and it showed.  It's really too bad such a good thing adventually came to an end, although i'm still a little confused to as why; probably money issues of course.  I still have almost every single gamefan mag printed, and often go back and read them.

Ok, anyway, i'm done daydreaming, keep up the good work, lantus.
