N64 Emu Compatibility Only
« Reply #15 on: June 09, 2003, 11:39:00 AM »

I just downloaded PJ64-X 0.6, burned it onto CDRW (Since I've got Xecuter1) and launched Super Mario 64. First with the Rice plugin which resulted in a noticable slowdown and choppy sound, and after with the Daedalus plugin which resulted in a playable speed and almost perfect sound. But still it ain't perfect. It seems like compatibility depends on what format/extension the rom is/has, and also what countrycode the rom has. Any ideas/suggestions of how to make the games run perfectly?

No matter what graphics plugin you use, it is using the same sound sources. Its from jabo's basic sound plugin. The audio is abit choppy. In some games like mario 64 its only very slight, and once you start playing the game you pretty much forget about it.

A known problem with Rice's plugin is that repeater glitch (someone called it 'bleed'). The author worked on fixing it, and did patch it so it didnt happen, but then it caused a whole slur of other problems.

On another note, to clear up so no one assumes the opposite, the author is infact going to continue on the project. This wasnt just some lets pick up some cash and hit the road type deal. Some of you might have seen rice released his 5.0 plugin 4 days ago. This will be encorperated in the next version, and lets hope it fixes the repeater glitch.

And guys, as far as compatibility, open up Project64X.rdb with notepad, and you will see every single known rom, and a Status= note next to each rom. I personally tested alot of roms and put notes. It isnt too specific, and compatible pretty much means without major flaws.

Ive noticed that rice's plugin is abit more smooth, and the daedalus plugin is abit more sharp, but a little choppy.

Thanks for the update Iriez.

So it is confirmed then that in reality, there are sound issues on Mario 64 (?).  I'm guessing that people who confirm it as having perfect sound just aren't audiophiles and/or don't consider the slight crackling of sound to be an issue (?)

The emulator is certainly awesome, it's just when you play it over a speaker system, the crackling of sound is magnified rather nicely, and it hurts the ears.

I'm more than happy to wait it out for the next release though.
