Gensx 32x And Segacd Compatiblity
« on: April 01, 2003, 09:34:00 AM »

Wasup.

First, I'll be helpful and list some of the 32X games that are compatible with the PC version of Gens:

Blackthorne
Cosmic Carnage
Darxide
Doom
Knuckles Chaotix
Kolibri
Metal Head
Mortal Kombat 2
Motocross Championship
RBI Baseball '95
Shadow Squadron
Space Harrier
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Bridge Simulator
Star Wars Arcade
Tempo
T-MEK
Toughman Contest
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Racing Deluxe
World Series Baseball '95
Zaxxon Motherbase 2000

Next, I'll give you the link of where I got my info: Gens 32x compatibity list

Finally, I'll chastise you for not doing a search, which would have gotten you your answer pretty quickly.  To help with you with Sega CD compatibility, click here:
The Answer to ALL Things.

Having said that, as fun as Gens is to try out (its like a new toy!), it definitely needs more work.  But it IS a great step in the right direction, and as I said in another post - this could be another gem in Xbox's emulation crown if its fine tuned. smile.gif

Peace,
mr jones

There should be a list on the Gens PC page, I believe that is where I was when I looked at it last night. Though some shit actually works that shouldn't on the XBOX version for some reason, that is the sound is better than it should be in some cases. Go figure.

As for running stardard Genesis roms, it is crappy atm, also 32X runs like crap to for the most part, playable but crappy. On the other hand Genx is REALLY good at running Sega CD's atm, here is what I have gotten working so far...

5 In 1
Lunar (voices don't always sinc)
Lunar 2
Mortal Kombat
Snatcher
Spiderman
Adventures Of Willy Beamish
Captain Tsubasa
Earth Worm Jim SE
Ecco Tides Of Time
Out Of This World
Heart Of The Alien
Monkey Island
NBA Jam
Radical Rex (acts like it is loading, and does nothing, black screen)
Rise Of The Dragon
Shining Force
Sega CD

I just ordered about 12 or so more games off Ebay, inclding Vay, Popful Mail and stuff like that, so I'll be testing more of the better releases as time goes on.

What I wonder, is HOW exactly do you guys get your games working?  I've had almost no luck.  I'll give the run down...

Shining Force works, but there is no in-game music
Lunar crashes after the title screen
Silpheed crashes either upon load of stage 1, or during the third or fourth wave of enemies
Popful Mail crashes after the Sonic loading screen
Snatcher crashes when I choose to head toward the first mission

These are all ISOs I've made from the originals.  What is your process for copying the games to the Xbox?  I'd love to do exactly the same and see if I get better results.

Are your names set up correctly like in the tutorial here:

angelfire.com/alt/xboxguide/

If your music is not correctly named, it could cause certain games to crash, Lunar is one of them.

If you get it working, let me know how well your audio and voices sink with the game.

Oh ya, Revenge Of The Ninja (no worky)

Radical Rex, the same.

They don't work on PC Gens either though.

I don't have the music seperated from the rest.  Do I actually have to do that?  I thought leaving it as a .bin file would work fine.

So far converting the bins to ISO/MP3 has fixed my problems with Shining Force CD and Lunar.  Silpheed still crashes though.

Are you ripping your own CD's or downloading them, if you are ripping then compare what you are doing with my guide:

http://www.angelfire...oxguide/segacd/

I'll be getting Popful Mail and about 20 others in through out the next week so I'll post and update here and on my dinky little page soon.

Some games i've tested:

Lunar EB - Works 100%
Lunar TSS - Works. There are lipsync problems with some in-game videos.
Mortal Kombat - Works 100%
Night Trap (SCD) - Works 100%. Haven't tested this through the disc swap point though.
Night Trap (32XCD) - Doesn't Work. Game says "This game requires the 32X adaptor to work"
Sewer Shark - Works 100%
Silpheed - Doesn't Work. Opening FMV plays fine, but game crashes after loading Level 01.
Sol-Feace - Doesn't Work. Crashes at Produced or Licenced By... Logo
SonicCD (USA) - Works. The FM effects (jumping, rings, explosions) are processed WAY too fast. Everything else runs great though.
SonicCD (JPN) - Works. Same FM effect problems as the USA version.

More to come...

Overall, I'm very impressed by the progress in this emu. I think i must've spent close to 2 hrs with Lunar TSS before testing the next game. Ahhh, nostalgia.... I do think that Hikaru needs to allow directory creation/browsing for SegaCD games, or *.iso recognition for the Game Launcher, so we dont have to scroll through 500 files to get to the data tracks. Also, some compatability and bugfixes here and there should make this a great addition to the Xbox arsenal. BTW - to those of you who have the screen off-center problem, GensX8f contains a fix for it. Grab it from here: http://www.geocities...578/gensx8f.zip

I've found that one of the easier ways to rip these games is through Roxio EasyCD. Just open it up and go to Disc > Disc Information. Select your cdrom drive and it will display the cd's tracks. Click on the data track and click Read Track to rip it to an .iso file. Do the same with the audio tracks, but specify the Save As Type section as *.mp3, and set the bitrate to whatever you want (I always rip it to 192khz). Its MUCH faster than having to do bin/cue, then Binchunk to iso/wav, then mp3 the wavs. When you mp3 the audio from Roxio you can simply select the name of the .iso file (erase the .iso extension of course) and hit Save to automatically name the mp3 files with the same name as the .iso file.

Good to see others as into this emu as I am. I never played Lunar 2 before, so I began playing part 1 again to refresh myself as to what happened (it has been years since I beat it) before I play part 2.

I have been dreaming of Sega CD emulation on my XBOX since the day I first heard of the XBOX. I'll probably (over time) keep that little page updated with as much Sega CD and perhaps 32X info as possible, since I know it is a rare collection amonst the typical rom collector.

Thankx for the new ripping tips, I'll have to put up alternative methods on my page like the one you mentioned. Thankx!

"Silpheed - Doesn't Work. Opening FMV plays fine, but game crashes after loading Level 01."

Okay, I'll stop bothering with this one now that someone else had the same issue.  I don't expect Popful Mail to work either.  Hopefully in an update.

QUOTE
Do you just shove the ISO/MP3s in the same directory as the rest of the roms?

Yup.  As it is right now, GensX doesn't support multiple game directories, so you hafta plop everything into the ROMS directory.  Its messy, but it runs...

...just keep in mind that the sound fx are messed up. sad.gif

Dumb question, but I see BIOS files already in the emulators folders, are these the real deal, or do I need to supply my own?
