just check the ini setting for mame, and if nothing turns up looking in there, re-install the mame-x emulator to the hard drive and try again, chances are a file is dodgy.

no no no... you do NOT need to unzip your roms... you will have a HUGE mess if you do.. you have something else going on.. I had this problem myself a few months back.. forgot what I did to fix it though.. I think I just erased and reinstalled a week later and saw what I did wrong.. unfortunately cant think of it now.. I am sure its in the .ini though..
