Mame-x On Xbox Harddrive....
« on: August 25, 2002, 08:30:00 PM »

Mame requires a VERY specific directory structure which does NOT include long file names.

I've had very good luck with it by burning it onto DVD-R with exactly the same structure used by the PC versions.

Roms should also be fully merged for them to work.

It may be possible to modify the INI file, but bear in mind that MameX may not fully parse it.

Ok thanks opjose !

i'll try to config the ini file again.
Maybe the problem is due to long filenames.

Thanks for the help.  laugh.gif

I copied the files from a CD-RW that worked perfectly into a directory on the E Drive, I also modified the mame.ini file and no matter what path... I get something that looks like:

Error : Path not found E:\MameX\Roms\*
or
Error : Path not found E:\Roms\*
or
Error : Path not found Roms\*

So I'm not sure what path to use....  maybe I should put the stuff in the root of that partition?

Okay, I tried using a path of:

. (placing the mame-x files in same dir as roms)
/roms/
roms (placing the mame-x files in the root of E)
E:\MAMEX\ROMS
E:\MAMEX\ROMS\

SoOooo... after a few hours of trying several combinations, it still can't find the roms directory.

I haven't tried running MameX from the hard drive.

I have been able to place almost all of the ROMs on a DVD-R and run mame from the same DVD.

The speed is quite fast, on the rom searches and loads so I have had no reason to try.

I would bet that the guys who wrote MameX assumed that it would be working off recordable media (the D: drive), which may be why you are not having luck with the hard drive.

Why not go to DVD-R or CD-R/W?

QUOTE (9ign @ Aug 26 2002, 04:44 AM)
I too am having problems with mame, but its the mamex 1000 Roms .bin/.cue release.

I can't extract it... the SFV file check is perfect, but everytime I try to extract it from WinRar it tells me there's an "unknown method in MAME-X.bin"

Anyone run into this?
Thanks,
-9

AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!
I followed your instructions word for word. I copied mame into E:\Emulators\Mamex and I didn't touch the mame.ini file at all. I'm getting pretty pissed off about this. When I boot mame from my dash, the version and core build comes up, then it just stays on that. I left it like that while I went to the shop, when I came back about 20 mins later it's still there. I got all my roms in the right directory. I've already burned the whole thing to CD-RW and it works flawlessly. I just want it to work from my godamn Xbox HDD!!!
Any help will be greatly worshipped... sad.gif  sad.gif  sad.gif

X-hacker;

This normally means that MameX (for whatever reason) is unable to open the path given for something (normally the roms or fonts) in the .ini file.

It tends to freeze when it cannot find the fonts it needs for it's display or if it cannot open a folder/directory to read it's contents.

Try burning it first, to a CD-RW (which you can erase) with only a ROM or two.

This may or may not be the cure but I found a very 'stupid' fix for my Mame-X.

I used the new config utility that just came out.  It was version 0.1
With that utility you enter in the path to your Mame-x and the roms.

For some reason (maybe it had something to do with me running FlashFXP at the same time) the config file generated for Mame-x had the slashes all the wrong way (as used in FTP instead of PC or Xbox).
e.g.  F/mamex instead of F:\mamex

Also, I changed all the directories to my F: drive when I should have just left it alone as D: drive in the config file.  Eventhough I'm running purely off HD the D: drive setting worked.

Sorry, disregard my last reply.
I was confusing the new XBox media player config utility with mame-x's config file.  I must need more sleep.
