Huh?

MOST of the NEOGEO games work on my system, provided that they are under 52Megs (I forgot the exact figure) in size. Are you using the "Blue" MameX instead of the default "Green" one?

The alternate MameX engine is specific to the NeoGeo games. You have to switch to it before starting the NEOGEO games.

Note that I have verified and merged the ROMS with ROMCENTER and CLMAME first, then burn them onto the disk with STOMP.

I have practically all on a single DVD-R, except the ones larger than 54 megs uncompressed.

With only a few rare exceptions most games work pretty well.

Go to http://www.romcenter.com/ and download it.

You cannot simply throw the ROM zips into a directory and expect them to work.

Mame ROMS usually rely on the presence of other ROMS located in other zips which must be present. Since the Xbox has limited memory it cannot maintain a complete list of all the available ROM files and then unpack and repack them as needed (which the PC often does).

You'll need to MERGE your rom "families" together using ROMCENTER or CLMAME. Your NeoGeo rom zips should also individually include the NeoGeo master roms themselves (which is what I did).

While this creates larger ZIP files, you'll end up with less of them.
I.E. you'll end up with one zip that actually contains all the rom components for 8-20 games. Mame will still figure out what's in the zip and least each game seperately.

Ideally you should test your ROMS out on a PC version of Mame, to be sure you have everything in the individual zip files.

Once done, use STOMP to burn a DATA disk. DO NOT utilize one of the XBOX ISO generators. For some reason using one, screws up MameX.

If you have the entire mame archive you can place all but the largest 10-18 or so onto a DVD-R along with the MameX executables.

Almost all will play perfectly.

Remember that you'll need to switch to the NeoGeo MameX version before attempting to start up NeoGeo games, using the controller "switch" sequence (view the readmes for MameX).

Study RomCenter a little. It is very easy to use, but a bit difficult for the newbie to understand. The Romcenter help files provide complete explanations... (Remember for next time; GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND!)

Sheez, I just did go into detail.

Big hint, make everything work on a PC first, and you'll have no trouble for the Xbox.

As far as obtaining the ROMs and NeoGeo sets, well... nntp is your friend. Nuf said.

CLRMame and ROMCenter will do what you need.

I believe I used CLRMAME.

STOMP is also a MUST.

If you're a newbie at Mame, go to the PC-MAME web sites. Setting up the Xbox is little different with only the caveats I pointed out.

Sorry I don't have the money, bandwidth, or attorney's on retainer to support a slew of people downloading a 4.4 Gigabyte ISO image of MameX with all of the Roms.

NNTP would be an option, but I doubt if I sent the image to someone who claims that they will post it, that they will. I've had this happen before.

BTW: You are getting closer. It sounds like you almost have them fully merged but not quite.

I haven't tried loading the ROM's to the hard drive, but the mame-x people say it works.

Basically if you can get the roms to load from DVD-R or CD-RW you'll be able to do the same from the hard drive.

BTW: I now recall that I ended up using CLRMAME instead of Romcenter, since CLRMAME has an option to include the bios code in each zip file. ROMCENTER doesn't do this automatically.

opjose: will your method work for HDD instead of burning the stuff onto DVD?

It works. Just put all roms in the rom directory of MAME-X and no need to edit MAME.ini (just leave the default rom path to D:\ ) mame-x will find roms auto. laugh.gif  laugh.gif

I have some Neo Geo games and they work great, they are Metal Slug 1 and 2, Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters 94, 95 and 96.

If anyone has tried more games please let me know!!!

ThanX.

If Metal Slug 2 runs, you'll have no problems with all but the larger games (such as Metal Slug 3, etc.)

I end up omitting any games over 54+ megs in size since I KNOW they will not run.

I think it is not important to merge them - when you look into what files are actually needed for the game you can easily put them into zip and check if they work OK on MAME on PC.

What do you think merging is????

It's exactly what you've done by hand!

CLRMame and Romcenter merely do ALL of the work for you.

You can tell these programs to omit clones, omit crappy games (those awful cassette ones,) etc...

Yes you can omit the clones if you wish. But by doing so you are also omitting some games which are derived from the original Master Roms, yet are actually different.

Also not all the Masters work in Mame (including the PC). Sometimes the Master's "protection" has not been cracked, but it has been cracked in the clones. You need the master rom and the clone, to play the clone.

Yet again some games utilize ROMs which are part of other games. This is why you must fully "merge" your roms. Doing this by hand is silly.

MameX can only deal with ONE zip file at a time due to memory restrictions.

If all the required roms are not in a single zip, for a particular game or games, then it will not be able to load them from other zips and you'll get the missing rom message.

However, yes, why have 20 copies of Space Invaders.

Although I've been able to put ALL of the .61b release roms on a single DVD-R (minus those few largest roms that the Xbox cannot handle).

Yeah, right, goold luck sifting thru the 10,000+ rom files trying to pick off just a few.

You'll spend far less time learning CLRmame or Romcenter and get it right too.

However if you -LIKE- pain, go for it!

ng-sm1.rom
ng-sfix.rom
ng-lo.rom
NEO-GEO.ROM

just put the bios roms in the neogeo game zip files...
drag and drop, added them to the zip
every game that fits in ram runs
with no problems.

use CLRMAME if you want to learn something new...

I was misunderstanding.
Seems as tho some folks didnt understand that the system roms
need to be included in the game.zip with Mamex.
(am I wrong? please let me know)
Unlike the PC version NeoRageX which does not require it.

However you accomplish that task is really your own call.

Tom M. started this post, from what I can tell, in order to build a list of Xbox MameX compitable games and it turned into something very different.

It would be nice to have a list of verified games.
I for one know that I dont have complete ROM sets of all the games I have.
So it would be nice to know which ones are worth tracking down.

I know the limitations of emu's so spare me the trip...

Limiting compitablity to file size is a good way of emilinating over 54 or so megs but this is by no means the defintive way of knowing what's working and whats not...

So here goes my list of working NeoGeo MameX b6 games:

Aero Fighters 2 and 3
Alpha Mission II
Andro Dunos
Blazing Star
Kizura Encounter
Metal Slug 1 and 2
NAM 1975
Neo Bomberman
Neo Driftout
Overtop
Pulse Star
Robo Army
Samuri Showdown 4
Sengoku 1 and 2
Viewpoint
World Hero's
Zed Blade

Contributed by MolekeX
Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters 94, 95 and 96.
