Xbox Dead :(
« on: May 21, 2006, 11:39:00 PM »

Hey everyone... I'm ashamed to say that i tryied the xdk dev/debug kit... and it ruined my xbox, so I was wondering if anyone know how to fix it... I've read a couple of tutorials where they talk about a hope of re-flashing a eeprom, but I was wondering if anyone knows about whether or not this reflashing works for version 1.6b because what i know is that only v1.0 - v1.5 can be reflashed so... this tutorial is for only those? I just want a confirmation, or if anybody knows if there is still hope for my v1.6b xbox after xdk catastrophy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

FYI:
xbox version: 1.6b
symptoms: starts green light for an instant and then starts blinking red light, no audio or video output
what i have tried:
1. installing a cheapmod with m8 bios, as I understand this works like an alternative eeprom but insted of booting it tryies to boot three times then it hangs red flashing light, i've read this is because of a bad LPC built or something but i've checked those over 3 times and every seems to be ok.
2. installing the cheapmod but now with the cromwell image and the eeprom backup that i have w/ the addeeprom program as described here: http://arisme.free.fr/Xbox/Reflash/ , but since it brings out the same error that the chip is incorrectly installed i don't know if that works :s
(does anyone knows if the xdk kit also ruins the LPC so that no modchip can be installed?)

oh well, any help or ideas are very much appreciated (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Well it sounds like you use the recovery disc on your retail xbox, what happens when the recovery disc is used in a dev/debug kit is it flashes the TSOP and eeprom and upgrades the xdk dashboard, works great. But a real debug bios and eeprom cannot run on a retail xbox. But dont use it on a retail unless you know what your doing. You need a V.16 eeprom and embed it into a bios and reflash your eeprom. And you LPC is fine by all means.

Well i did use the recovery disc, i was looking to start and develop some software for my xbox :s but forgot to read a bit more about this, I don't know anything about developing on the console and now i just wish to do whatever is simpler, either turn the xbox to developer console since the eeprom is flashed... or bring it back to retail. But is that possible? to trun the retail xbox to a devel/debug console?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

I did try to use the v1.6 eeprom and burn it into my cheapmod but the pure eeprom image from the evox backup (I don't know if there is an other way of getting the eeprom image) brings this error:
CHEAPLPC on printer port at 0x378
Flash at address FFC00000 reports device ID man=BF dev=61
SST 49LF020 (2Mbit)
ERASING Device...
Erase completed
PROGRAMMING from FFC00000 -> FFC000FF with eeprom.bin
Warning: File is only length 256 bytes but device holds 262144 bytes
Program/Verify took 130mS
Programming completed and verified

So i try to use the cromwell-patched.bin using the addeeprom program and the eeprom image but my xbox brings the christmas lights (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

thx!

forget any thoughts of running retail a retail bios on a chip, you need to toss a debug bios on there. If i remember right, there is only one debug bios for 1.6.

The recovery depends on which XDK you used, and how far into the process it went. If your lucky, you'll be able to throw in a chip with a debug bios and be on your way. If your unlucky your going to have to pull the eeprom and reprogram it. I have a feeling the second will be the case.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) XBOX FIRST BREATH!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

thanks programmingace for the tip, i tried the Yoshi-Debug-256k-1.6b_.67.bin image on the cheapmod and it booted!! I saw the flubber animation (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
buuut... the HD won't work, it boots the fist time and when it comes to load the dashboard it reboots it self, the second time it boots ok but it brings out error 13 and when I try to boot evox or a retail game, from the cd it brings out error 14, both these errors are dashboard loading related so...

about the develop/debug console, the hd, should be unlocked right? (mine is locked) tomorrow I will try to use an unlocked one, this bios says that first it boots E:\\:Dash2Gam.xbe ,en 2ém
C:\\Evoxdash.xbe & en 3ém C:\\xboxdash.xbe so I will try to built a new one unlocked with any of those dashes, but... which dash will work? do you know if it boots the retail xboxdash? or is there a special msdebug dash? what about the regular evoxdash? do you know if it boots? i'm sorry for my "dumb" questions but i know nothing about debugin or developing on the console...

thanks for the help in advance! and  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) for the first breath!

Well since it boots up to a point you can install the xdk dash with the recovery disc if you like.Just run the recovery disc and when it ask you which kernal(BIOS) you want, there will be a few to select from,DO NOT PICK ANYTHING,just turn off your xbox then turn it back on then remove the disc and the XDK dashboard should be up and running

I tryed to install the xdk, using the xdk cd that i used in the fist place... but no luck, I kept specting the which kernell i wanted, but it never appeard, it just brings these screens:
1. "press any gamepad button to begin recovery"
2. "recover as a retail xbox or a dev kit xbox?"
3. "select the version of the dashboard to install, 3944, 4920, 5335, 5691"

after i selected anyone of those (i've tried them all four), it copies the files and then says to reboot the system, after it boots, brings up error 13 or 14  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)  hehehe but at least it boots (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
I'm begining to wonder if i am using the correct xdk cd... hehehe any thoguhts?

tnx!

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) It's alive!!! it's alive!!!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I now officially have a dev/debug console!!! dash version: 5335, i used xdk cd version 1.00.5849.1, what happens is that it locks the drive after finishing formatting it, but I followed the unlock tutorial with the schematic and instructions found here: http://www.llamma.com/xbox/download/ST3100...l%20english.pdf i followed them and it worked like a charm! i used electrolitic capacitors because i didn't have tantalium ones as the pictures show, and I did it on a proto board so very little soldering was required, anyways it works, and now all I have to do is use the xdk cd I have and format for what ever dash i want, and then unlock it using my "the unlocker" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) I used Yoshi-Debug-256k-1.6b_.06.bin as bios, but it hangs sometimes... so I will try some of the other debug bios found.

Summary:
xbox version: 1.6b
chapmod installed: sst49lf020
bios version: Yoshi-Debug-256k-1.6b_.06.bin *unstable*
dash version: 5335 *trying the difference between them*
xdk cd: 1.00.5849.1, dec 2003 release
hdd: unlocked using the tutorial above or else it won't boot

hope this helps some other people that are lost like I was, thanks to everyone for their help, comments and ideas!

Wow, thats great news for those who ruined their box using the disk.
I cant read pdf's on this pc, but did you unlock using a pc or xbox?

(And a lil offtopic, does that bios still allow you to boot homebrew/backups/originals?)

On the PDF you can find a circuit that plugs to your serial com1 on your pc and via hyperterminal sends your HDD the commands to unlock it, pretty cool! so yes I used my pc.

And this bios is kindda unstable and odd, I tryed to run splinter cell the original game and sometimes it runs but you can't see it :s hehehe it's odd i know but you CAN see the ubisoft logo at the begining and hear all the sounds but form that point on you can only see the image all dark as if the picture has all the brightness down something like that, and sometimes it hangs, I will make some more tests using other bios and other games, and post the results.
