How Do A Launch A Game From Xdk Launcher?
« on: August 13, 2005, 10:25:00 AM »

I got the XDK (5933) to work with my retail XBOX (1.6x with xenium ice running the "Yoshihiro Debug 1.6 512k Beta" debug bios). Many thanks to this site:

http://www.hydras-world.com/index.p...oxretailtodebug

When I saw the matrix sample running on the xbox, I almost cried.

How do you start a game while in the XDK Launcher? Do I need to go into the XBOX Dashboard to launch the game?

I can see the matrix sample process running on the xbox through VS .NET 2003.

I get an error message when I try to launch the XBOX Dashboard:

"An error occurred loading an Xbox executable."

Thanks to this link:

http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xdk2.php

I was able to get a game to show up on the list on the XDK Launcher. The only difference from the article above is that I had to move the game folder into "xe:\DEVKIT\" for it to show in the XDK Launcher (it's a bummer that the xe: drive is only 4.77 GB...enough to hold one big game; oh, well, i guess i can always switch it out).

What's neat is that if the game has a demo/other xbes they will show up underneath the main game as well! This is so cool.

Unfortunately, when I go to launch the game from the XDK Launcher, I get this error message:

"An error occurred loading an Xbox executable"

I've search through the XS forum without any luck.  Help anyone?

You can't boot a Retail signed game with a Debug Bios on it's 'own'!!!!

...You need to install Hack_Dev_Kit to run Retail signed .xbe's.

Thanks, man.  You've saved my sanity.  I've been banging my head around trying to get it to launch a game.  I nearly took a sledgehammer to my xbox -- why won't you run the blasted game, why, why, why???  :)

Geez, why doesn't the XS forum have an edit feature?  Anyway, I digress.

old engineer -- what version works for you? Does 5849 work?  If so, I guess I'll need to down-grade from 5933.  Or do I need to go way back to 4627?  Thanks.

Nevermind, 5849 still gives me the "An error occurred loading an Xbox executable" error message.

I guess I'll have to try the old and crusty, 4627...

Awh, give me a break.  The blasted 4627 won't install unless you have visual c++ 6.x installed (which I do not have since upgrading to VS .NET 2003).  Not only that you have to have VS 6.0 SP4+ installed as well as the processor pack v4+ (neither of which I have).

So, if I do the above, that means I can't use VS .NET 2003????  Errrh, I hate MS!

So, I'm an idiot.  I decided to bite the bullet.  What the heck?  I installed VC++ 6.0.  Then updated it to SP5.  Then installed PPC v5 over that.  Finally, 4627 installed without any more b***hin'.

I copied over the minimal files to the XBOX for the 4627 dashboard.  Re-booted with the "Yoshihiro Debug 1.6 512k Beta."  Great, it locks up at the MS load screen.

What could it be?  Well, maybe I need to copy everything over from the 4627 dashboard.  Okay, I did just that.  Re-booted.  Same lockup.

Hmmm...let's try another bios -- "Xxxxxx_4627Debug."  Rats, not enough room on the xenium ice bank since I already have the evox m8 bios installed.  So, I took a leap of faith and removed the evox m8 bios to free up space for the 4627 debug bios.  Launched the bios and got a green screen for a second or two then got dropped back into the xenium OS screen.  F**kin'...son-of-a-b***h!!!  Rat-Bastards!

I guess the blasted 4627 debug bios isn't compatible with an XBOX v1.6x.  Oh, well, I guess I'll just have to make do with 5933.

Has anyone got a debug bios to work with XBOX v1.6x that allows you to launch a game?  Please drop me a hint...I sorely need one.  Thanks.

sounds like you  got issues with using the xdk launcher. so don't bother with it. once your debug ip is set in xdk launcher you can change the dash you boot to by editing e:\\dashboard.xbx. no more need for xdk launcher, now for launching games... go to the 'usual places' and get fdrive.dxt and place in e:\\devkit\\dxt. now use the xbox shell extension that is part of xdk to browse your xbox hd from your pc and simply double click on any xbe you see to run it. hope ya get it all squared away - Jay

hey,
after moving fdrive to the dxt folder on my xbox I can now see "Memory Unit 1a (F:)", but I can only see lock.log in that folder, nothing else... when I look at the folder's properties I see a full volume of 129 GB or so... anyone know how to access that?

Thanks o-mightly JbOnE!  I have done as instructed.  But I did not see the F drive.  I have obtained said fdrive.dxt.  I've copied it into the "e:\\devkit\\dxt" folder and rebooted XBOX.  When I double-clicked on a game, it gave me the XDK launcher window with the same error message:

"An error occurred loading an Xbox executable."

I've tried unsuccesfully to change to a different dashboard.  The default content of e:\\dashboard.xbx has:

\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2;xshell.xbe

I changed it to:

\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2;evoxdash.xbe

When I rebooted, the xbox "flobber" animation played then went black (not blue like my previous attempts).  I had both the evox.ini and evoxdash.xbe on my c: drive.

Maybe I have a different partition setup then everyone else.  Here's my partition (when connected via FlashFTP with non-debug bios loaded):

C <-- xshell.xbe, xboxdash.xbe; evox.ini, evoxdash.xbe
D <-- empty
E <-- DEVKIT, dashboard.xbx
F <-- evox.ini, evoxdash.xbe; games, apps, videos, etc.
G <-- empty
X <--- empty
Y <-- data (not sure what it is)
Z <-- looks like some junk files

With the XDK Launcher (and debug bios loaded), I see the following drives in my Xbox Neighborhood on my PC:

Volume (B:)
Main Volume (C:)
Game Development Volume (E:)
Utility Drive for Title 4C4XXXXX (P:)
Utility Drive for Title 454XXXXX (Q:)
Persistent Data - All Titles (T:)
Persistent Data - Active Title (T:)
Saved Games - Active Title (U:)
Saved Games - All Titles (V:)
Xbox Dashboard Volume (Y:)

Please, help me anyone... I am at my wit's end.  :(

almirf -- sorry, I don't have Halo 2.  Madden runs fine thought.  I finally got my answer from Team Xecuter's forum (you may want to try posting there):
