If it has already been done, then I'll take a flaming and go hide back under a rock.

.... but if it hasn't .... what I was thinking was wouldn't it be handy to remotely log into my server PC from the Xbox and start-up services, reboot, do whatever ....

I've seen VNC running on mobile phones, I believe the software is opensource, so it should be a possibility for something like the Xbox to handle?


P.S.: I know you can do this through Linux, but linux is painful to run through a standard TV with no keyboard or mouse, could there be a smaller alternative that could be called up from the dashboard (or better integrated into a dashboard)

The Xbox can't multitask, so it's not possible to run 2 things at once, therefore whilst you could embed VNC into a dashboard/app, it won't remain active if you play a game or launch something else.

I understand the multitasking restrictions (more accept than understand), and that wasn't what I had in mind... I was thinking more of a standalone .xbe that could single-task link to a vnc server on a remote PC, let the PC do all the multitasking but allow it be remotely controlled through the Xbox.

a VNC client... definitely possible, just need some sort of scaling for the resolution

On the mobile devices I've seen VNC running on they use a technique similar to oversized windows desktops where the device displays what it can with the avialable display area and if the cursor moves to the edge of the screen the VNC client scrolls accordingly.
