You've done well in capturing the 8-bit feel.

Can you make the enemies be a 2 frame animation instead of static?  I think that'd increase the "walking enemies" as opposed to "floating enemies" feeling.  And are they gonna shoot?  If you have some enemies that can shoot on angles to target your current position i could see the game getting pretty intense..

also if you're using pure SDLx consider converting to openXDK once the input bug is fixed.. it would be a perfect game for it considering the graphical complexity, and then you could release it on a website legally.

New video is up:
http://www.nformant.net/new3.avi

I sped up the video so it's running at 60FPS now, like the game does.

There's a problem that comes with using the Xbox Movie tool to make games, though. My enemies and the fireballs are all using SDL_GetTicks(). The timer still works perfectly, but because the movie tool reduces my FPS down to around 15FPS, the enemies and fireballs are moving faster than they should.

The enemies are coming across now at ~1 second intervals, but in the game, they come at 2 second intervals.

stuff added since last video:
- fire animation, collision detection, and death.

Please check it out and let me know what you think. The input from you guys is very valuable to me.

Bosses are already planned, but they're comin after I get all the mechanics down for the rest of the enemies.

I'll be getting a HUD in there once I can take a better look at how SDL_TTF works. I've been looking at the sources you released, so I've been learning a bit about it.

I don't plan on doing scrolling backgrounds, however. What I plan on doing is having each level be a different 'scene', with a boss at the end.

With college daily, and with family members watching television during the day, I have a hard time getting a lot of work done at any one given time. I'm pleased with the progress so far, though.
