Cannot Start .xbe ... Same Story Again ...
« on: December 30, 2004, 01:19:00 AM »

Hi,

I'm thinking about seriously writing a tool for the xbox (not only running some samples ...) using Cygwin, Eclipse and OpenSDK. Please help me, I cannot run the OpenXDK sample .XBE files.

I installed Cygwin and OpenXDK (added the $paths) and compiled the OpenXDK-Samples. Now I have a bunch of ".XBE" files. I renamed DebugPrint.xbe (tried also others e.g. ComingSoon ...) to default.xbe and FTPed it to the XBOX. The default.xbe lies in a subfolder in F:\Apps (I tried also F:\Games) - the subfolder has only this one file. When I start it (using Avalaunch or Evolution V+3921) I see only "Loading" (Avalaunch: "Launching" smile.gif and nothing happens.

I also tried non-patched XBEs and XBEs patched with xbepatch.exe. Furthermore I used "dependency walker" to ensure that the .exe is only linked to "xboxkrnl.exe" and that linkage is "by ordinals" and not "by names". What is missing ? Are the samples fully linked to the xboxkrnl.exe or do I need to put the xboxkrnl.exe to some special place ? And where can I get xboxkrnl.exe ? (I assume that this is the "preinstalled" kernel that allready is on the box, right ?)

XBOX version: Manuf.Date: 2003.10.1 . One of the old ones with the cd-drive with the "2 holes" that can play CD-R's.

BIOS: I tried EvoX M7 ej and EvoX M7 and (alltough I know there might be problems) Xecuter2 (4980.67_256k.bin).

Dashboard: Evolution (and Avalaunch started from Evolution)

Modchip: X-Bit (assembled in about spring,summer 2004)

Questions:
- What am I missing ? How can I make my XBE work ?
- Do I have to patch using xbepatch.exe (this was not written in the OpenXDK docs) ? (Note: I DID try that)
- Where can I find a OpenXDK_V6_compiled_XBE, so I can try if it works
- Can I send an XBE to someone who knows his XBOX to be capable of running OpXDK_V6 bins to try to ? (That would be really kind, thanks a lot smile.gif

Thanks,
Roelof

Hello,

thanks for your help.  smile.gif

You can download my test .xbe at http://berg-solution...box/default.xbe - it will appear with the name "comingSoon.exe".

Furthermore it would be kind if you could send me one of yours to [email protected].

Thanks a lot and happy new year,

You could also try getting a BFM bios that is supposed to work with the openXDK and load it via Phoenix Bios Loader, and try running the code from that environment.

Solved  cool.gif

I updated the BIOS to EvoX M8. That wasn't sucessful yet. Then I tried a newer dashboard (EvolutionX V.3935) and finally I can run some of the OpenXDK samples smile.gif Allthough not all are running (esp. some SDL samples are  broken).

Thanks,

Glad to hear you got it working.  So far we're struggling on input stuff, so the sdl joystick and pattest might not do what they're supposed to.  I've not compiled any of the other sdl samples to be honest, so I'll give it a go doing a mass compile and checking what works and doesn't.  Anyways, good to see you've got some working!
