Recording Tv Programs On To The Xbox Hard Drive
« on: December 05, 2004, 06:24:00 AM »

I have no idea if this is logically possible, but i thought I would throw it out to those more experienced than I. Would it be possible to record TV programs on to the xbox hard drive? I know there are dvd recorders and digital decoders that have hard drives and are able to copy straight to them (much like a VCR or DVD recorder), so I was wondering if it could be done with an xbox....

Do you mean use the Xbox like a TiVo? Not really...the only way to do that with the Xbox is thru Linux and using a USB box with hardware encoder. The problem being that the Xbox uses USB 1.1 so the breakout box will only be able to shovel the data at 1.25MB/s bursting (which means less than that sustained). Another catch 22 is that a driver needs to be available to port to Xbox Linux (if necessary to port) to use said breakout box.

You can look into running a Mythtv backend server and have your xbox with linux on it be your frontend server.  Check it out at www.mythtv.org and www.mysettopbox.tv
