I don't know if this is possible of anything BUT....

I would think it would be cool if there could be a program VERY similiar to dvd2xbox that would rip a DVD into DivX so that it would like fit on a CD or something....

Is that possible and if so do other users think that this is a good idea. BTW: I can program C++ but not very well and I don't have access to the XDK....

however "cool" ya might think it'd be - keep in mind that on a 3ghz P4 with 1gb of dual channel ram it takes HOURS to rip a dvd to a divx movie. now imagine doing that on a machine with roughly 1/6th the cpu power and 1/16 the ram. nice way to kill a few days hehe - basically not worth the programming effort to run on the target hardware. it's doable - just not something anyone would use.

there are plenty of apps which will do this on a pc - and that is definitely the way to go - then simply transfer the avi's onto your xbox  - i should know - i have about 1200 divx movies i do just that with smile.gif

It also reflects the DVD drive. If you have a shitty drive, yeah, it'll take quite a while...

...and how can you have that attitude, with something like "what can't be done?" in your sig? blink.gif  biggrin.gif

hrm - i thought when i said "it's doable" that i was being pretty clear - perhaps not - one more time, with feeling...

IT IS DOABLE...

just one more thing more efficiently done on a pc than on an xbox - and if you're really that desperate to do it - use the media center as posted above (which at the speeds quoted the vid quality/encoding is seriously questionable from a machine with the specs of the xbox) no offense to the media center team - just after 1200+ divx encodes one kinda gets an understanding of what it takes to make a quality rip - ask anyone else who does alot of divx rips if you want a second opinion

that congruent enough with the sig for ya ?

You can put words in my mouth if you want, that's cool. I'm just curious as to why you had to shit your pants when I a brought that point up--not like I was stealing your thunder, son. Now let me ask you this: do you think I should sit here any longer and listen to a shmuck like yourself, try to belittle me? I don't.

"Development Section: Only serious discussions about Xbox development."

Hm.

Again I'll bring the token point of "why don't you do this with existing tools in linux."  Why reinvent the wheel?

hell you could run it in your closet and vnc to it to check the progress.

don't recall putting words in your mouth - actually quite the opposite - and sorry - didn't see your rockin 45 posts - didn't mean to "belittle" you o master poster - and fact of the matter is SON (and i guarantee i am your elder) - you dug into me 1st with your smartass comment. that's the problem with you kids today - you can dish it out - but you can't take it. now adhering to the dev only you felt the need to bring up - both my posts do just that as well - any dev on any platform will tell you there are basics to think out before undertaking a new project. 2 of the most important being...

1 - is there an existing hardware/software solution to achieve this goal
2 - is it product of enough value to warrant the manpower/cost of creating anew

now if you can't handle the "belittling" you started dealing in the 1st place then perhaps you should learn when to keep your mouth shut. cuz i guarantee i can out "belittle" anyone

probably took all 2100 for you to get one right as your perception is more than a bit cockeyed - i never said you belittled me or took any shots at my "precious reputation" - i said you put words in my mouth by appointing me an attitude. and i sure as shit would never say i was more mature than anyone - said i was older - and for the record - i'm a friggin cornocopia of character - why you insist on placing more depth and meaning into anything than what is there in front of you is beyond me. i wasn't stomping on a "newcomers balls" - i've helped a gazillion newcomers - i was stomping on your balls personally for feeling the need to not only make up, but comment on this "attitude" you appointed me with. i answered the guys question - it was doable - but on the hardware it was not something anyone would want to use - it would just take forever (running as an xbox app - not in a *nix environment). replace the words "cocky douchebag" with "New Yorker" and you're right on track. now feel free to comment on attitude - cuz this post was teeming with it.

and to the poor guy who asked in the 1st place - you're best off ripping and encoding from dvd to divx or xvid on a pc - and even then in a windows environment as linux divx encoding is not as good as windows (yet). even on a halfway decent pc you can count on clicking "rip" or whatever the app u use has on it's start button and have a damn near dvd quality divx/xvid rip in a matter of hours ready for you to xfer and enjoy on your xbox

I appreciate a level response... Now for the real question.

What FREE software should/can I use to rip my commercial DVD's to DivX?

THANKS  laugh.gif

Here's the problem with FriendTech Media Center and Linux....

I have a 160 gig and Linux can't read or write to my F: drive AND my E: drive is too small to do anything with....... sad.gif

You don't need that.

I once ripped a DVD movie on a stock Xbox running debian woody in about 3-4 hours. Though because of the size, I can only do it once as I run out of free space to store anymore :-)
