Opensource Ipod Prog.- Portable?
« on: July 31, 2004, 03:51:00 PM »

This program basically allows you to share music from your ipod to any pc. Its coded in VB and is open source- is it portable? The source code as well as other info is avaliable here. Alas- I have no programming experience- but I'm sure this would be an awesome program for the xbox.

EDIT: would any integration into XBMC be possible?

"portable" - no, xbox apps are written in c/c++, and doesnt the ipod only use firewire? (which the xbox lacks).

no, it can use usb 1 or 2 as well (with the right cable).  And yes, this could be portable, as VB is a dumbed down VC++.  You just need to bring this to the XBMC team's attention, JayDee... where are you?

VB is dumber than C++ indeed. But there is no such thing as porting from different languages. VB -> C++ is translation, which means -> complete rewrite, which means -> 0% of code re-used...

Finally, VB synthax, and most of all, dependencies, has NOTHING to do with C/C++.  VB is interpreted whereas C/C++ is fully compiled...

The link in the firstpost is dead :|

That VB script probably doesn't address hardware directly. It still requires some intermediate driver to interact with the device.

Now I heard that the iPod uses USB mass storage driver, which is already in Xbox libs/kernel (for memcards). I have no idea if this can be used.

If not, I fear the worst for your idea. It would involve writing USB driver code which comes close to writing your own OS.

Seems like its unportable. It would be great to access songs on the ipod while its hooked up to a computer on the same network on the xbox- it'd be a pain to have to hook up the ipod directly to the xbox- through a 1.1 connection- accessing it through a network would be a lot better. I know that the new daap streaming in xmbc can play songs in the itunes library- but not from the ipod. Is there any solution? I have Anapod- a third party software solution- and it streams http:- I have not been able to get this stream to work with the xbox. Any suggestions?

I think the goal here is to dock you ipod to your PC or home server, open up XBMC, and then stream video/music from the ipod throulg the PC and into XBMC.

At least that is whit I would like to do with it!!!    pop.gif
