Also you can use it when your roomie is tying up your phone...

A native Xbox Skype client would be great, so I don't have to fire up the computer to talk. Though the Skype protocol is proprietary, so probably no luck unless it can be directly ported somehow.

Linux is the best bet; unless MXM ends up being promising.

As far as I recall; you can only load 1 .xbe at a time, so loading the IM client would then render the dashboard useless.

...unless somebody wants to try to work an IM client into a dashboard.  Then, we've got to worry about which protocol...AIM?  MSN?  Jabber?  Yahoo Instant Messenger?  SMS?

im not sure whitch one, aim, msn, or yahoo.  I think skype would be pretty cool. it actually sounds better than a telliphone.  but if it was typing only.  then it would probably be aim.  I think the coollest would be a trillian spinoff that had skype too.   biggrin.gif   im kinda asking for a little much though.

MXM scripts can run from within the dash, and plugins can be installed anytime.  So, any number of clients can be written for it.  Only question is whether it's worth the effort, considering most people don't have keyboards on their xboxes.

If some documentation could be found for the IM protocols, that would make it much easier.

i think an AIM client would be realy cool, and its something that i have been looking for, but it would be a ton of work, you would want to have a virtual keyboard along with keyboard support, you'd want to be able to have multiple chat windows open at the same time. and people probibly wouldnt be happy navigating using only buttons on their controller, and would probibly want to have an analog act as a mouse, so my verdict is, unless someone is extremely devoted to making a chat program, just use linux, and buy a yoyo to play with while you are waiting for it to load

Instead of focusing on anything using aim or existing im clients, I was thinking it would be sweet if they would make their own.  Basically what I am saying is this, you would have a dashboard load up like unleashX, they would have their OWN im service.  When you would log in it would take you to a menu what the normal options like enter a chat, send an im, yadda yadda yadda.  It would then be even cooler if in the chat it was like yahoo where you can get on the mic, or whatever, turn the cam on.  I think this would be possible because there are commercially available webcams and mics already available for Xbox, why not use them?  Now taking into consideration the fact that MOST people probably do not have keyboards, that is why the use of at least the mic would be very beneficial.  In my idea of the perfect setup, there would be chat rooms VERY similar to our message board here.  Also, you should have access to these boards.  To go along with these the chats should be moderated just like that boards here are, this way the chats would be put to good use and would help to make the scene even more helpful then it already is because it would be easier to get help from somebody right away with a problem so you dont have to keep checking up on the boards every 5 minutes.  I don't know seems like a good idea to me, I just think it would be a good idea and a perfect way to make sure things stay as efficient as they are now in the scene, and even take it a step further.

I'd go with Jabber, merely because Jabber servers can also run gateways to connect to other IM services such as AIM, MSN, etc.

Having voice would be nice.  I think if we could put together voice, a nice dash, and support for XBC or Kai all in to one nice package, then there would be a formidable competitor to Live

Of course, those services may already have their own implementations of voice and lobbies that I don't know about since they are unusable through the firewall on the dorm connections.
