Java Programmer Needed!
« on: May 12, 2004, 12:37:00 PM »

Hey there.  I am part of the team X-Peer, which is a P2P trading program for your XBOX.  You can check it out at http://www.x-peer.tk or http://www.xbox-connection.com/xpeer to find out more information.

We are currently looking for developer(s) to help with both sides of things.  X-Peer will have the ability to trade files between Xbox - Xbox, and Xbox - PC.  We need programmers to continue working on the Beta build that was released.

The private beta that has been released was only given to a few people, but that flopped because no one gave any sort of response.  To our knowledge, no one has been able to get X-Peer running succesfully linking an two Xboxes or an Xbox and a PC.

For right now. X-Peer will only run on a Linux modified Xbox.  However, we have contacted one of the makers of an Xbox Linux distribution, and they said once we get it running successfully, they will include it on a boot-disc of Linux, so you will never need to install it on your Hard Drive, it can simply run off the disk.

So what we need is someone skilled enough in Java Applications to complete the program.  In return, we are offering a free copy of the program to them, as well as an administrator's account to X-Peer, as well as the ability to post any one (1) banner on the main X-Peer site ( http://www.x-peer.tk or http://www.xbox-connection.com/xpeer ) in a 120*600 or 600*120 format.

Also, we are looking for a possible host of our X-Peer server or at least someone willing to offer theirs to test the software.  We would be able to pay with copies of the final software, a fe banner links, and some other services as well.

We realize we can't offer much at this point because we are such a small team with VERY limited funds right now.  Soon, depending on how much (if anything) we charge for the software, we will be able to pay people with actual money.  Until then, we hope that someone will be able to offer their services and volunteer some time (and maybe some server space) to what could end up being an amazing tool.

Please PM or email me with anything you can do to help.

PS. If you can't help anything, please do us a small favour.  Go to the X-Peer site ( http://www.x-peer.tk or http://www.xbox-connection.com/xpeer ) and click on one of the Ads By Google links (there's one right at the top, and one a little down on the right side of the page).  By clicking that, we earn a small amount of money which goes to the funding of X-Peer.  That way, you aren't directly involved in the creation and development of X-Peer, but you have contributed at least a little bit.

Thanks!

We are in extremely early development of X-Peer.  As it says in the post:

"depending on how much (if anything) we charge for the software"

Implying that we may not charge.  Fact is, we probably won't charge for the software, especially if it is included with a distribution of XBOX Linux, because it would all be a part of the deal.

So wait, you want to write a program that exchanges xbox software in some sort of Peer2Peer way.  What makes me laugh is that you are offereing the developer that writes the program a free copy of the program he writes for free.  How generous of you.

Get real.

are you sure the reason it wouldnt boot up for your beta testers isnt that the program hasnt been WRITTEN yet?

Hey lets not forget we'd get a free banner too!  laugh.gif

Seriously though, of course you'll feel the hate if you want to sell it. The software itself would be a good idea if it was FREE and XBOX NATIVE, not linux native...  And most of all, I think your aproach to get it done simply sucks...  I think my free banner would say "Please pay to download illegal software, that way we can get sued like hell" tongue.gif

here's my favorite part of this bollocks

"We kindly ask that you click on any of the Ads By Google links. That will generate a profit for X-Peer and that will speed up the development, creation, and selling process. That means you get the X-Peer system MUCH faster, just by clicking your mouse. Want it to get there even faster? Click on a few ads. Come back tomorrow, click some more. Come back the next day, click a few more. Then continue that for a while, and we can pretty much assure you that you will have X-Peer in front of you soon. We realize the homepage has been bombarded by ads, but we want people to advertise on our site so that we can get some money and collect some money to continue developing and perfecting X-Peer, and are able to get it to you too! All we are asking is for at least one click. If you can do more, then please do. The more you click, the faster it gets to you. You win iin this situation. The cost to you: a mouse click! What could be simpler?"

I would be a suitable developer for the project, but please, tell me, tell us all.. how does YOU getting more money from clickthroughs make ME program the stupid thing faster?  rotfl.gif

1) The program is NOT illegal.  Running it on Linux is not illegal.  However, if you have put Linux on your XBOX, then that is the illegal part.  Installing this program to your Linux XBOX is not illegal, the axctual installing of Linux is.

2) When a developer creates a program for a company, they do not automatically get a copy of it.  Their payment for the creation of the product is not unlimited use of it, it is a payment of cash or whatever the agreement is.  That is why programmers use locked company computers to create programs, because that way nothing leaves the room.

3) The program has ben written, however neither of us have a way to test the software due to hardware restraints.  This is because we are running chipped systems, and we want to test the program on an un-chipped Linux XBOX.  We are asking for a programmer to help with the rest of the development process and design some components of the program.  Also, we need a server to at least test the system, and IF we charge for the program, it is only to help cover some of the server costs.

4) The ads by Google links do in fact help.  By receiving money to fund the X-Peer development process, the testing and maintenance of the server, and keeping it going with constant updates.

However they get paid and I bet you in every case they'd much rather have the money.

this program is useless, when you can already run kazaa under wine in linux ( http://appdb.winehq....w.php?appId=747 ), not to mention the tons of other free p2p systems with linux clients.

Considering the grey-area of the law in which a p2p server resides I'd hate to get myself caught up with a "company" ( blink.gif ) that thought linux on xbox was illegal.

Like overnet!

Edit: Man, I'm retarded, a second ago I reported your post trying to hit the quote button, but hitting the report button instead, I don't know how I can actually look at the report post page and not notice the difference between it and the add reply page.  Somebody shoot me.
