Does the server side need to be ported as well? Or does anyone know if the current server prog would work?

If you go here http://www.freealleg...e.org/index.php

This is the group that has taken this project to the next level

I have brifely gone over their fourms and it's 100 % playable with there own login auth server and every thing.

They have ported the sources over to VS.net 2003

As for the DX version I dont know yet.

So it sould really be min. to port it over to the xbox.

The only problem would be the control issue.

That would mean working on keyboard controls (assuming this is being ported) and probably mouse as well...

Yes, either the controls would need to be remapped to the contorller or either add support for keyboard and mouse, (controller)

I have not played this game yet so I wouldn't know what all the functions and screens would be.

I would vote for Keyboard and mouse support.

I'm been dying to test out my Codejunkie's keyboard for the last few weeks.

Going to have to install linux to play with it  tongue.gif

After looking thru freealiance.org, I'd rule out the controller...too many buttons needed.

After reading though very little of the orginai source there is support for a controller.
for controling the ship.

If it was mapped for only for the ship and fire buttons that wouldn't be so bad.  And Keep the the keyboard for all other parts of the game play.

It also supports DX8 there realy should be minmail to port over.

Even though it may be really convaluted to control, etc, it would be nice to have full joypad support, for those of us without keyboards, and also, for when you just don't want to get the keyboard out and I'm sure some people must use the same keyboard for their PCs, so it wouldn't always be approprite/possible to unplug it.

I'm not saying don't have keyboard support, it would just be nice to do everything from the joypad if you wanted to.

I would love to port this over myself, but I need to brush up on my skills.  So I will be taking baby steps until then.

As for controller supprot.  I dont think it would be possiable to support the entire game on it.  But hey nothing is impossiable. wink.gif

hmmmm... i couldn't open the project in VB .NET natively... the source code looks like it is VC++ 6 code.... just porting that to .net is a major project in itself

Of course it won't  fire up in VB.NET, it wouldn't load in VB 6.0 either.  Because its a C++ project...

As for "porting" it to .NET, there isn't such a thing for C++, as its pretty much the same.  DirectX is DirectX, C++ is C++, and VC++ 6.0 projects import just fine in VS.NET.  So the major task you are talking about is in fact a double-click (or just about).

And even if it was a major task, who said VS.NET had to be used to port it to Xbox?  VS 6.0 is also well suited for the task...

How about using a controller and a DVD remote.  That remote has a bunch o' buttons on it.  It would be great if more things supported the remote, it would have been great for navigating the menus in DDR Ultramix.
