just banged a mode in it with a debug bios and flashed the eeprom

Well, that's why I say never even MAKE a recovery disc. It's like making a bomb for no particular reason - you certainly do not need one - then accidentally hitting the trigger button. It's just a bad idea on may levels.
At least you were able to recover.... many people have locked drives and never bother saving their EEPROM images. That's a bad combination.
