Many game developers use 3ds max these days. There is a hefty price tag on it.

A more basic yet still quite powerful app is Milkshape 3D.

Personally I enjoy Milkshape 3d.  mostly because I'm a complete amateur and I was able to get a usable product out of it.

I find a lot of 3d modellers force you to start using primitives, then 'extend->extrude->slice' and all that.. compared to milkshape's simpler vertex+triangles = model approach.  I realize this ability isn't unique to milkshape; however I have run into modellers that didn't allow this approach
