Has Anyone Started Working On A Webbrowser?
« on: January 08, 2004, 07:33:00 PM »

Hey,
I was thinking, and this would be a really good idea in my opinion.  My xbox is personally connected to the internet via my crossover cable 24/7, and an internet browser that would allow you to browse webpages or check e-mail directly on your tv/xbox would be great!

When I thought of this idea, I did a search on google and found someone who (maybe) was going to make one, but the project is most likely dead right now (havent heard anything in like 7 monthes on any of his projects)

it was called xbrowser - http://sourceforge.n...ojects/xbrowse/

the description is:

XBrowser, web browser for the Xbox. This project is a port of mozilla to the Xbox console so it can be used as a form of "web tv".

I think this could very well be possible and developers should think of expanding the capabilities with the xbox using the internet and other internet-based apps..

What do you think?

They've tried. I've tried. I'm sure you tried (or at least thought about it)

The Mozilla source is so bloated I sure as hell wouldn't want to try to port it. I remember a team was being assembled by F|ux back in the day, but I don't think anything ever came of it. If I was to try I'd start with MozillaFirebird, perhaps. But that would be an undertaking.

Your best bet is to download GentooX and type "emerge fluxbox" then "emerge MozillaFirebird". This will allow you to browse the web all you want at your leisure.

Enjoy. =)

The problem really isn't porting the "browser". It is porting the underlying libraries... (e.g. javascript, java, dhtml, flash, gif, css, etc...) There is a lot of underlying technology on an operating system that the web-browser depends on...

While I totally agree with that, the Dreamcast had a browser, not a great one, but a browser.  It's not open source by any means, but I'm sure at least some in the xbox dev scene are from the DC dev scene, and nudge nudge wink wink, the news of booting win ce made me think to the DC browser, as I believe it ran off CE code.

the dreamcast had windows CE that's why the browser was there, because it was already on windows CE.

a standalone web-browser (ex: webbrowser.xbe) would be much better than running an OS (linux, WinCE) to get a browser up and running...

It would be alot easier for someone to take a Linux distribution, and customize it for webbrowsing (just a webbrowser, OSK, and current plug-ins for the browser)

It could be done to run off of cddvd.
And have Linux (with fatx support) format the Z drive and use it for the swap file.

the only way a good browesr would work is if xbox had its own version of html. just like wap for cellphones. just imagine surfing over to xbox-scene on your xbox and the site is perfet no flaws at all.

If there was a webbrowser that could be made with special downloading ability thatd be awesome. like ability to select exactly where you want your files to be saved. and you could download torrent files with it then thatd just be awesome. skip the computer, go straight through the xbox for downloads.

i was thinking of a basic one that rips out all html and just trys to display the text (like lynx i suppose) but i think theres one in dev, so i havent bothered...

one problem would be that html is so horrible more than half the code in the browser will be fixing errors 'webmasters' make in their code (to display it right)....

Hey I've already got one that does virtually what lynx but obviously more basic as I've spent ooh 30 mins on it. I was just doing it when I was bored.

If you're asking whether it's possible then you should really not be thinking about doing it as you wouldn't get far.

Anyhow, dear god there's enough topics which discuss this.
