Do I Have A Dev Box?
« on: January 04, 2004, 03:07:00 PM »

Thanks groovestar and I had one more question

I know it's not a "Debug" box now because it only has 64mb of ram.

What i'm trying to figure out now is IF i can run retail games at all on it??

Also, theres an extra "ide-looking" (but smaller, only 16 pins, 8 each row) coming out of the motherboard next to where the DVD cable goes in. Anyone have an idea on what this is used for? It's not connected to anything...

Thanks for help..

Hi all

I recently obtained a seemingly normal looking Xbox (minus jew, and a "prototype" stamp on the bottom)

It boots up to an XDK Launcher with a list of programs

DolphinClassic
Gamepad
Playfield
Audio Console App
Xbox Test Harness and
Xbox Dashboard

I can run any of these programs, 2 are demos and others I can adjust rumble sensitivity and shit like that

and at the bottom of the XDK launcher it says

"xdab 1020 (192.168.0.81) D | 1.00.3910.1"

I can ping that IP.

I try to put a regular game in the drive and it loads up this splash animation with music and says "XBOX" (i've never seen anything like it before)

then brings me to a screen that says "This is an Xbox game disc. Please put it in your Xbox to start playing"

but, it's already in my xbox...

I can hit "A" and it'll bring up a DVD player-type menu where i can turn subtitles/angles/etc...but i can't get it to play the game or anything

It's really weird and i'd appreciate it if anyone could clue me in as to what kind of xbox this is and if it's even capable of playing games

Thanks a lot

A 'dev kit' is white, larger than a normal xbox, says 'development kit' on the front, and has scsi, serial, and 2 USB ports on the back.
What you most likely have is a 'debug kit' which is green, and says 'debug kit' on the front.  They are the same size as a normal xbox so it could have just been thrown into a standard case.

Hi

I think for once I can answer a question  smile.gif .  The box you have is a prototype as you said. Companies that had parts that were used in the xbox received prototypes for testing there components (I'm guessing to check that MS had wired them up correctly). They came with all the installed software that you mentioned. I've not had a chance to play with one, so I can't say what it can and can't run.

I hope this helps clear stuff up.
