Xbox File System And Filename Limit
« on: December 07, 2003, 07:08:00 PM »

I'm just wondering if anyone's ever put any serious thought into the naming convention limits of the xbox file system? Is it that hard-coded into the file system or is it something else? I mean I know Avalaunch has a LITTLE bit in terms of 'fixes' for this, but have there been any plans for any sort of longer term, permanent fixes that don't require a particular dashboard? Maybe something in the bios, perhaps?

Firstly: No. I don't care about 'backing up'.

Secondly: Stepmania (for those of us DDR freaks that like to have it all as opposed to the 8 songs on the Ultramix, my Stepmania folder has 430 songs).

No, nobody has EVER given it serious thought.

:::sigh:::

What is it with all the newbs lately?

Here - this is my canned response directing people to GOOD information. Please consider the advice:

Please, for your sake as well as ours, first read Things You Must Know About The Xbox:, read EVERYTHING there. Then go to the main Xbox-Scene page and hit the tutorials links and other informative links found there. After that, in the forums, scan through the various pinned threads in the many technical forums here, particularly those that are relavent to your interests.

Hang out in the Newbie Chat and FAQ forums, browsing and scanning various threads there.... then if you still have questions, search before posting. Try a few variations... don't make a half-assed attempt, either. Check over the search options to make sure it's set up correctly.

If you've HONESTLY exhausted all of those steps, and are still bewildered by something, ask away. We'll recognize the question as a legitimate, or rarely asked question, instead of a FAQ or blatantly newb question.

This is not meant as criticism - only as good, sound, advice. 99% of the members here have followed it and many of them are here helping others, now...

Look, I don't need your run around and your BS. I know how to read a god damn forum, and I checked anything relevant to this that wasn't filled with a bunch of useless crap posts about the BIOS or the Dashboard (Which I really don't think either of these are the issue).

How long was it preached to people that 48-bit LBA could not be done on the xbox as it was a "chipset" limit as opposed to a bios limit? How many times do you think I had been banned from the xbins IRC channel in arguments over that very issue? "It's a chipset limit! it has *nothing* to do with the bios!"

This coming from the 'experts' on the issue, no doubt.

I've had a lot of very good conversations and discussions related to xbox hacking, and I wish that I were better at programming and modification than this. But there are some things that some people just can't do very well, and my thing is not programming.

At any rate, you don't even need to question my skill ability.

This issue is a very interesting issue and come on, can't anyone find any common sense things to do with the xbox? Or are most of the developers really just going to sit there and do codec and language updates to XBMP all damn day?

With that said, I'm sure someone with the required KSA's for this have probably taken a look into this?

And btw, since this *was* a question that obviously cannot be answered by peopple who still can't figure out how to burn a damn CD properly, why don't you go and answer it? I'd like a more updated discussion than being linked to 5,000 old threads that really don't exist on the last couple of pages on a few of the sections.
