Is This A New Thought Or Has It Been Explored?
« on: February 10, 2004, 08:44:00 PM »

I would love to see a VNC client for the xbox, so I was wondering if you had made any progress.  I use ultravnc on all my computers, so being able to use the xbox to log into them would be amazing.  I wish I could lend a hand, but I never got much farther than "hello world" and simple text based games in c++.  If any research or testing would help, I'd be glad to assist you.

but how much work isinvolved in porting a 32bit app to the xbox.

For example if i get a hold of the sdk would it be that dififcult to port the current rdp client in windows to the xbox ?

if its diffucit what are the challenges ?

im sure i can work this shit out !!!

the xbox cpu does not support the running of two apps at a time so this may be an issue - although if vnc emulates the pc then it may work but there would be only 64mb of memory so whatever vnc leaves would be the memory available for the app to run

also is it open source?

AntiGenX is suggesting a VNC client for the XBox, not the server so 64 MB is more than sufficient.   The VNC client is essentially a screenscraper.  It merely displays the screen of a remote system and relays keyboard and mouse inputs.

And yes, VNC is open source.  Also, a VNC server for the XBox might make a nice dashboard plugin.

Actually, no.  VNC is more akin to an X server, if anything.  SSH, on the other hand, is a protocol a establishing secure connections.  VNC can even be tunnelled through SSH.  Find out more here: VNC through SSH

Exactly! God knows I wouldn't want to VNC my xbox to my PC. hehe that would play hell on my games! Anyhow, the client would allow us to basically use our PCs from the Xbox, provided there was support for a mouse and keyboard. (USB, shouldn't be to much of a pain) I don't know about you guys, but my PC is upstairs and my Xbox is downstairs and I get sick of running back and forth. Also, it would alleviate things like people asking for web browsers and what not for the xbox.

It is open-source. if you're aren't familiar with VNC, think 'Symantec PC Anywhere', but faster. For more info check out these pages...

This response normally gets shot down, but afaik you can already vnc from your xbox to your pc using the linux version of vnc.

If someone is interested in porting VNC to the xbox i would suggest to port Ultr@VNC instead of RealVNC.

Have you tried live linux?
That distro is like 20 megs, and doesn't need to be installed.
It can boot from a cd, and do so relatively quickly.  It also includes a vnc client.  Check it out.
I haven't looked into it much, but I believe with some slight modifications it will boot directly into the vnc client.  Would this suit your needs?

Hey guys I love linux too, but I'm more concerned with something that could be a little more convenient than having to boot linux everytime I wanted to use VNC (I might as well get up and walk up the stairs- GASP!). Besides running it on top of linux adds overhead. Remember we're only dealing with 64 megs of RAM on that puppy, not to mention possible CPU load of other process. VNC would also require X and the appropriate libraries... I'm looking for a quick and dirty solution that I could boot from my dashboard. Plus it would be much easier for the unwashed masses. Everybody's happy....

No, but I'd love to check it out. Do you have a link? Googling the term "live linux" is well, less than informative in this case.

Looked at your link, even browsed the source a bit. It seems like most of the optimization here are geared towards making VNC run fast on Windows. I don't think that would do me much good, but I may look at some of their OS independant optimizations that could be incorporated.

I'm new to this whole xbox dev thing, so I'm just speculating. I know the xbox runs a striped win2k kernel, right? How close are they really? Can I use the same kernel hooks?

Any links would be appreciated.
