Great idea!!

I'm a very lazy programmer so I need some good motivation to actually get around to do things. This can be what I need to get started. I haven't done anything for the xbox yet but I'll try making something for the contest =)

good idea, id be in on this except its my finals week, so im busy studying for 'classes' and such. im hoping to join in on th enext one

Yeah, there is probably alot of us who are busy with finals this week and next.  I'm finished tomorrow with school, so I'm going to get started over the weekend.

Right, well after not posting in this topic for a couple of weeks because of lack of time, I'm gonna start posting the project's again. Well, the project has been going on each week but with little interest (Probably because of no one knowing about it and lack of time), but hopefully it'll pick up soon.

Remember we don't require a masterpiece. Anything will do.

On to the project:

Week 4 - Billboarding....don't turn your back on the camera!

Aim - For this weeks project, it is your aim to create a simple program that demonstrates BillBoarding.

Extra Info - There are numerous resources on the internet on what Billboarding is, but to be helpful I'll give a brief description here. It is where we create a 2D square for example, using vertex's an have it always face the camera, no matter where the camera is. You simply take the VIEW matrix, and use the inverse of that rotational part of it and apply it to your WORLD matrix for your object. This way its always rotated to face towards your camera.... So the steps to doing billboarding for the first time, would be to create a simple textured square, then move your camera and watch how you can see the sides of your flat image. It is your job to then rotate you textured square to rotate as the camera moves ...simple?...

Judging - This weeks winner will be the person who submits the most unique code... again there's so many things you can do with billboarding, you can animate a sprite on the 2D square, or create tree image and have multiple instances of your billboard, creating a sort of forest...its up to you.
