Migrating To A Newer Xdk
« on: April 17, 2003, 10:06:00 PM »

How's it going everyone.  I'm new to xbox dev (not so new to game dev).  I recently installed XDK 5344 and was previously using 4627.  I'm just wondering what files I need to copy from the new XDK to fully migrate to the new XDK.

Also, one other small thing.  When using 4627, and trying to remote debug, the compiler would ask for local copies of xboxkrnl, and a couple of other files.  When i would browse/point to copies on my hard drive, i got errors saying the files didn't match the versions on the box.... but remote debugging appeared to work fine after i 'cancelled' those file prompts... is this normal?

Thanks

You can get the newer versions of the XDK to work with VC++ 6. Firstly this relies on you having an older VC++ 6 compatible version of the XDK installed first, also although this method will let you compile programs using the new XDK libs it won't allow you to compile the examples (the projects are in .NET format)

What you need to do is right click on the executable and do "extract to xxxxxxxx" (this will probably only be available if you have winzip, winrar etc installed). This will extract all the install files. Inside the directory that has just been created is an XDK dir. I just copied all the folders that were in this dir into the directory that the older version of the XDK is installed (moving the older files to a backup location first of course).

Now whenever you compile you will be using the new versions of the libs and headers. There may be bugs in this process, all I know is I can now access the lightgun calibration functions while still using VC++ 6.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks for all the good information guys.  I'll probably stick to VC7 (.NET) for developing, simply because i like the interface a bit more (despite it's huge footprint)... plus, the intellisense works much better.

I've installed the new XDK... so as far as I know, it's in effect.  But, the XDK Launcher still says the old XDK version #... is there a newer dash I need?

Also, Ben... which files are responsible for WMV support?

Thanks
