Howdy again... ever seen a pair of these? i-Glasses HMD
Back in the day this was the Virtual i-O i-Glasses... (right here in sunny Seattle) B-4 they went out of business. I worked at this company for 3 1/2 years designing HMD's and did alot of stereoscopic work.
The methods of doing stereo are: 1.)on a PC, 'line-Interleaved' 2.) or field Interleaved...
Where method is: 1. every other line in a progressive display is an alternating perspective, and 2., every other field is a different perspective
The Direct3D patcher works by patching the rendering engine to calculate and display a different perspective every other line. Progressive..
So could the xbox calculate and display line sequential 3d(progressive) or field sequential(interlaced)? You freakin bet..
But f|uke is right., has to come from inside the box. We did it back in the day with 100Mhz 486's., but it wasn't that great. crazy shit was when the pentium 100's and 133's were coming out. oooh, and add a head tracker!? fak. good stuff! Games like Descent, Doom, heretic, Mech-warrior, even Quake took on new meaning in 3-D, more so with headtracking..
In the lab we even did 3d headtracked with an original PSX..
the trick would be to get the 3D patcher to work with these xbox Xbe's(re-write of the patcher) or writing game source that would display 3d correctly.
It's do-able... question is: is there enuf interest for such a thing? You bet your ass there is! Im a huge fan of 3D. Ive devoted my life to the quest of 3d and am now a 3d animator student at DigiPen institute of Technology. Like you said, we would need a patch to perform this funtion. Either a BIOS funtion, XBE patch, or a program that runs before your final xbe. I fully support this project and will contribute anything that I can to help it move forward. We where all promissed Virtual Reality in the earl 90s. What happend to it?! I had a VFX headset but it only worked forolder DOS based games. The only good VR is really expensive. Shutter Glasses have issues on PCs since everyone has a slightly different configuration. If we where to develop a 3d shutter glasses solution for the xbox, it would work for everyone. Shutter glasses are cheap and easy to get ahold of. In history, we have had only 2 mainstream consoles support 3D, both of them flopped big time. Sega Master System and Nintendo Virtual Boy. Lets make this work, lets bring true 3D into the Next Gen Consoles. Once done, it may set an exsample to Sony, MS, and Nintendo to further develope this technology for use of their current or upcomming hardware / software.
P.S. I will donate money to anyone who is able to persue and finalize this project. It may not be much, but if there is a high enough interest in the project, more may follow.
