How about this for an idea. A simple shooting game using two linked xboxes.

First person.
your location on the screen is the same as your aim.
Other persons location is the same way.

example: I aim off screen character hides behind some boxes and is extremely difficult to hit.
I aim towards the middle my character step out and takes his shot.

Hold down whatever to move forward.

I've been looking for a way to implement this. I don't believe there is any game that accomplishes this either. But I could be wrong.

Circuit City doesnt ship Over-seas??, so where can i get a  mad kats blaster in australia without paying $100AU or something silly. I might upgrade InvaderX3 to use lightgun.

Heh heh... I never thought of that.... I guess I could update X-Marbles to use the gun, too....  laugh.gif

yeah why not revamp of the early homebrews :-), seems homebrew been very quiet (at least on the games front) might have to spit something out soon lol, got a few projects that need completing here, was waiting for the open-xdk to get along but no joy there afaik.

btw ben, how would you integrate lightgun with marbles smile.gif whoa what a stretch of the imagination...

Why, you'd SHOOT OUT the marble combinations, of course!  laugh.gif

Unfortunately my Dreamcast gun and the Magic Box won't work, if as someone said the lightgun is simply the thumb stick. I always thought there were special drivers however....

Anyway, more information on how a light gun works can be found here.

Would be nice to make though.

Except that these lightguns don't blank the screen or paint it white. . .  (As the link states...)

Have you tested it on non-tube televisions? Just wondering about performance on projection.

If it's not doing the flashing trick, perhaps this gun works on a different principle, allowing it to work better on big screens and perhaps HDTVs (not likely, but gotta hope)?

I am very curious as to how these lightguns operate also.  I actually have both the MadCatz and the Japanese Thrustmaster one (which works fine on US boxes if anyone was wondering).  I also have the ACT Labs lightgun for the PC.  The PC ACT Labs one does work by flashing the screen, it is very obvious and only does it when a shot is fired so you don't get real-time tracking.  Both XBOX guns do not flash at all and give real-time updates as to where they are currently aimed (in other words: realtime tracking).  I have noticed this realtime tracking in some lightgun arcade machines where the lightgun was mounted to the machine (ie: Terminator) but always just assumed that it was something like an internal joystick   that was calibarated to match the screen or something.

I have also verifid that none of the lightguns (PC or XBOX) work with HDTV.

I've tried it on a 30" Tube HDTV and it doesn't work...  Also tried it on my new 50" RP HD and again nothing.  (Didn't expect it do, but I had to prove it to myself.)  I don't have access to a non HD RP.  I think that a line doubler would screw up any chance of working.

Well, actually, my PS2 Lightgun worked well on my RCA 55" RP - as long as you held it relatively perpendicular to the screen.

No homebrew games have been made for the light gun, and a remake of Duck Hunt would be fantastic. If any gamers decide to take this challenge on, all I ask is my name in the credits. A duck hunt remake would be extreamly popular, and if I knew how to program well (I'm learning) I would start this myself, but as I don't, you guys should try it.
Ready....
GO!

Light guns work in the same way as light pens. On your typical tv set or monitor the electron gun (in the CRT) scans across the screen (phospor) one line at a time. It starts at the upper left corner of the screen then draws going to the right. When it gets to the right the electron gun turns off goes down one line and turns on and draws the next line. It does this until it gets to the bottom of the screen. Where it goes back to the top and starts over again. These are called raster lines.

Well when the electron beam hits the phosphor it glows brightly and slowly dims until it is struck again by the electron beam. Our eyes don't really notice this bright and dimming because they do not refresh that fast. You can see the bright/dim effect if you record the picture on the tv with a camcorder. Since the TV and the Camcorder refresh at about the same frequency you will see a bright group of lines that roll up the screen.

Since the Video Chip in the computer has to create the video signal it knows where it is currently drawing the curent raster line. The light pen when pointed to the screen detects this bright/dim effect and when the light goes from dim to right it sends a signal pulse to the video chip. The video chip sets a latch which feeds 2 numbers, usually X location, Y location, into a memory location associated with the video card/chip. The computer program then looks at the numbers in the memory location. And can tell where the light pen is pointed on the screen by the two numbers.

Not that I have any time to work on it.... but at least it's there now.  blink.gif

Does anyone know if that japanese lightgun refrenced on page 2 of this thread will really work on an HDTV?  It seems to say so in the description at lik-sang, but it is a little cryptic.  It mentions a 100hz TV.  Anyone tried one?
