You don't "need" xbox live to chat, you need a headset running into the headset controler jack. you can communicat thought Voice games over Xbconnect, so there's no reson why you couldn't set up voice communication in Evox. But I think Xbconnect is working on a stand alone version for the xbox that would have voice communication.

somebody mentioned tabs earlier to go to different aspects of this program. i.e E-mail, web. IM etc... if that was the case could u make it so anyone could make a new Plugin to use with it, sort of like a big xbox internet tool kit? (i.e if i wanted say an IRC scipt, then i'd be able to make one and release it that would fit comfortably as one of the tabs)

thats my thoughts, good luck

I like the idea. I'm just confussed on a few things; How will it connect? Will it need a PC internet connection? I don't want to have to have my PC near my Xbox all the time. So, connection is my big thing. Which makes the project even bigger, since you'll need to supply a connection setup to please me.

Then it wouldn't be standalone.  That and I can't (and I'm sure not everyoone else can) afford to just run more wires and still have the damn PC running.

You don't need your PC on for a router to work...

XBMC is on sourceforge, but to compile it you need vs .net and the XDK. The sourec is 100% legal, but you need to understand that the compiled binaries are not.
There are tons of opensource im clients that they could use code from, port and by the nature of opensource, the GPL, post on sf.

The project seams dead, nothing since december untill now, but do not draw conclutions that have no subtance in reality when it comes to it being legal or not...
