deadbyte - just a quick note.... "writing a bios" is one of the more difficult and specialized things you can do as a programmer. It involves delving into low-level code and understanding the enormous complexity of modern computer systems, to provide interfaces and to initialize the many devices that exist in such a system, as well as manage many low-level resources.
I've written countless embedded applications on systems ranging from 6809, Z80, various Intel and even ARM processors over the last decade, and even I consider "writing a BIOS" a daunting task.
So when you are greeted with derisive responses, don't take it too personally, the reaction is to your naivete, not to you personally. If you are really interested in the inner workings of BIOSes and operating systems, I suggest you start with Computer Science classes, along with an engineering discipline.
