Signing Code
« on: December 12, 2002, 05:45:00 PM »

how does code get unsigned when you transfer it from the original disk to the xbox hd? i always thought the signing process saved a key into the xbe (or whatever) file. or maybe it was a crc on a part of the file, but can someone explain it to me?

*EDIT* sorry if this isnt the best place to post this, but oh well!

This is my interpretation of what is going on......

There is a 'media types flag' in the the xbe header.  Before the xbe is signed, the type is set to original.  When you transfer it onto your harddrive or your cd/dvd/r/rw they dvd drive reports a different media type, leaving the old signing invalid.  I think this is what is going on, but Im not sure.

just to make sure, a dvd-+(r/w) has a diff 'media type' than a cd-r/w, hd... so that means if it was burned to another xbox format dvd or whatever it's called, it would be seen as signed again because the media type would be corrected? or have a completely misinterpreted? (sorry for my spelling if it's a bit off, finals are frying my brain!!!)

If it's burned to anything other than an original xbox dvd (which you will find pretty difficult) it is basically unsigned since the media flags wont match.  However, the "No Patch Hack" found in most mod chip bioses get around this, previously, you had to Patch the xbe to work on different media, the hacked bios doesn't require this, which is why it's called the no patch hack.
