Xbox Boot 3 Times Then Starts Flashing Orange/red

Xbox boot 3 times then starts flashing orange/red possible fix with everyone’s help

Does your xbox boot 3 times then starts flashing orange/red?

Symptoms

Xbox turns on, there are three stages.
1)the light in front of the xbox turns solid green for 3 second, then shuts off.
2) it immediatly comes back on, only this time it blinks geen for 3 seconds then shuts off and 3) it comes back on and stays on blinking red and green.

At this stage you probable have a green flubber blob and you might have some sound but your xbox does not let you play any games or go to the xbox console.

Solution:
I have an xbox that has this problem.  This problem can be caused by a bad trace but that is not the only cause of this problem.  I have looked at all of the traces with a magnifying glass on my xbox and everything looks ok.  I have disconnected the hard drive and the cdrom drive and the problem still happens.  So that should indicate that it is not a hard drive or a cdrom drive problem.  I installed a mod chip and started it up with the default Cromwell boot bios and the xbox starts up with no problems all lights are green.  I flash the bios to Xecuter2.4980.  The xbox boot 3 times then starts flashing orange/red and stops at the flubber blob.  So I flash the chip with a Cromwell Linux bois and everything boots up and I have a green light and Linux works fine.  Cromwell Linux bois does not use the flubber blob.  So that makes me think that the flubber blob is corrupt.  So If I am correct the boot sequence for an xbox is bios--> flubber blob --> hard drive.  To fix the problem we need to have an xbox boot up to bios --> hard drive.   This is the part that I need the community to help with.  I need to test a bios that bypasses the flubber blob and goes directly to the HD.  Please PM me or post any ideas or possible fixes.

Thanks

P.S. If you have this problem flash you chip to a Cromwell Linux bios and post if it fixes your problem.  This will help show that this fix needs to be worked into new bios updates provided by Xecuter, EvolutionX and other teams that supply bios replacements for xbox.

I have this or a very similar problem right now and im going insane from it.

Only difference from what you describe is that I get no picture on the tv at all, its just "dead".

I harrassed the dude that chipped it only to find out that he actually DIDNT chip it but flash the original rom thats inside the xbox and added a switch which he claims he added so that I could set the bios to writable/non-writable, As I dont trust this guy at all anymore Im not gonna deal with him about this.

Im sorry I have no solution to offer you but just a question: If I go out and get mine chopped properly will the macine come back to a working state? Or can I somehow reflash the original rom? I cant figure out how I could do that when I cant get any visual connection from the xbox...

Thanks for any input!

Update I'm going to try XBtool_1.0.13b2.zip tool to modify Xecuter2.4980. I hope it will fix my problem.

It looks like xbtool can remove the following from bios:
Animation
Trademark Symbol
DVD Drive Check
X logo
Splash logo

I will try this and see if it fixes my problem.

I doubt it has anything to do with the flubber animation, but something else which happens at around the same time.

I dont know anything about linux - but it sounds like something else is failing that linux doesnt need/use.  For example if the eeprom was corrupt, then linux might still run ok but x2 bios would die (since eeprom holds video region settings etc which linux might not even check, i dunno).  I think a debug bios can boot without eeprom settings - give that a try.

I am glad that you have found that linux still boots - most people will just complain on these message boards that their xbox doesnt work anymore and expect someone else to fix it.  This could help alot of people who have non-booting xbox's.

Goodluck and keep us posted!

first of i din't read the hole post.
but what i have seen is that there is something wrong with your bios. i
had this problem when i.
1 inserted my mod chip wrong on my xbox.
2 when i had a bad flash.
3 when my modchip was out my xbox and the modchip swithcs was on.

so it is a bios problem try a new flash or a new modchip.

I doubt it can be totally realated to a bios problem,
I have had several different bios's on my tsop
2 of the 3 above don't apply regarding Modchip cuz there is none,
and a bad flash is not possible since I had been playing religiously using evox m7 and xecuter 4979 on the tsop for months before it occured.

Ive recently updated to 4980 on my mobo, but didnt remove the animation since I was no longer having this problem, unfortunately the problem has reappeared and now I', finding it difficult to flash the TSOP again, since I need a modchip w/noanim to boot up.

BTW I can play games fine on mine about 95% of em anyways, I simply press eject after the 3x red/orange flash and it boots to my dash (with a no anim bios)

and this has been know to occur on NON-MOdded xboxes.

If I flash my Xbox with FlashBIOS_Cromwell_227 or cromwell-2.27b bios everything boots fine.  If I flash Xecuter2.4980 or Xecuter2.4977 or even EvolutionX M7 Bios my system stops and start and stops.  And it will lock up on the opening Xbox flubber section of the Xbox bootup.  I hear sound but it does not do complete the boot sequence.  I have tried to modify the bios with XBtool_1.0.13b2.zip tool to modify Xecuter2.4980 I have tried to remove:
Animation
Trademark Symbol
DVD Drive Check
X logo
Splash logo
and no luck

What is the boot difference with Cromwell and Xecutor bios?  Besides one is for xbox and the other is for linux
Thanks

Wow, it still doesnt boot with the xecuter no Animation?
Mine actually does, but locks up like you describe whenever any flubber(animation) is shown. (NOTE: ONLY WHEN I DONT REMOVE ANIMATION FROM BIOS)

Have you tried downloading an older bios that already has the noanim done by superfro?
(just to remove any user error from removing animations)

Main diff I know from linux and Xecuter is reading of the eeprom, linux doesn't use its data from what I understand.

Also Just as another side note:
about 1 in 40 startups I get a christmas lights (FRAG)

Correct me if i am wrong the no Animaiton bios remove the flubber(animation)?  I have tried it on mine and it does not work for me.  I still  frag.  I have tried noanim done by superfro on bios ver 4977.  I have started to look into eeprom stuff.  Did anyone make an xbox bios that does not read eeprom?  Does eeprom live on the xbox hard drive?
Thanks

what version xbox do you have? if you have a 1.4 or 1.5 your xbox WILL frag if you use x4977. you should use x4979, or x4980. get them from xbins to make sure they aren't tampered with, and make sure they are NOT BFM. BFM = Will not boot from a modchip, it stands for Bootable From Media and is meant to be used with no mod exploits. your problem sounds like either a bad flash, or a bios not compatible with your xbox version. just try flashing with a clean version of xecuter 4979, none of those no ani patches etc.

I have a xbox ver 1.0

I have tried to use x4977, x4979 repack and x4980.  They all frag.  If I load cromwell everyting boots ok.  I use x2bm ver 2.0 to flash the bios and I get my bios on mirc at #xboxemu.

Bios that I have tried to flash my xbox to

4977_darkerblue_noani_256k.bin
4977_gray_noani_256k.bin
4977_green_noani_256k.bin
4977_orange_noani_256k.bin
4977_purple_noani_256k.bin
4977_red_noani_256k.bin
4977_yellow_noani_256k.bin
x2_4977.bin
xecuter2.build.4977.rar

Thanks

I believe a V1.4 or V1.4 xbox flashed with a 4977 bios acutally flashes red and green, not red and orange.

are we all referrring to these flashing colors?, because I haven't seen a post yet saying the red/orange flashing is attributed to bios problem,
In fact I've seen more post from people who have never opened there xbox and have a red/orange flashing then anything so far.

So leech what happens when you boot a xecuter2 bios with no anim?
Where does it freeze? on the X logo screen with the xecuter text coming in?
