Found A Way To Use Usb 2.0 On The Boxen
« on: November 03, 2002, 02:08:00 AM »

Well, was searching around, and found a slew of 'bridge boards' that convert your slap-happy IDE interface into a USB 2.0 one! Neato! Theoretically, that means you can just take out the original HDD, carve out a hole on the front of the box for the USB port, and hook that sucker up with a USB HDD (2.0, of course, as 1.1 has been determined as too slow)! If this ends up to be possible, then screw rackmount, 411GB Project, or any other variant..... a HDD USB kit'll be all we need for our HDD swappin' needs!
I'd like someone with more experience in general hardware mucking to confirm that my pipe dream would work, so here's the URL:
http://www.ioiusb.co...odName=USB-121i
There's other bridge boards there, of course, so if this specific one doesn't work, then another one may. To boot, this company ain't the only one that produces these bridge boards; go on Google and type in "USB Bridge Board" to find more companies that do this sort of thing.
Perhaps even the great Opjose could comment on this one? =-)

I don't get it?

Since the Xbox USB controller is only a 1.x version, anything you throw at it will be speed limited to 1.x.

I have a USB 2.0 speed drive which I've connected to the Xbox, but it's limited to 1.0 due to this limitation.

This is why older computer systems require a whole new USB controller to utilize 2.0 speeds.

No I don't think you get it...

"The ATA/ATAPI port of the ISD-300A1 is connected to a mass storage device."

E.G. this is a "controller" not a IDE "storage device".

You can't plug this into the IDE bus to get USB 2.0 xfers. It only works the other way. To convert an IDE hard drive to be a device on a USB connection.

You can't use this at all, except via the Xbox's USB 1.0 ports, which we know already work albeit in USB 1.0 mode.

Yeah, really.... if it can work one way, shouldn't it work the other way? Besides, like I said, this isn't the only bridge board on the site, nor is this the only company that produces this type of board. You're telling me you looked through the whole site and found _nothing_ that would convert IDE to USB 2.0?

No one is really interested in going IDE TO USB like he wants to, but the other way around has some applications, e.g. portable drives, etc.

AFAIK you will NOT find a board that does this.

Even if you could, why bother?

The Xbox can only see one IDE device, so even if you had multiple drives hooked into a USB to IDE converter, the Xbox can only deal with ONE and only ONE drive (other than the DVD), as per the IDE specs.

Since this is a downgrade in speed, who would want to do this?

True, it would be a downgrade in speed, and only one drive could be hooked up at once, but it would be nice for a multiple HDD solution. I.E. one drive holds games, while another holds movies. If you want to play games, you plug in drive A, boot up the Box, and play. When you get bored of that and feel like watching some DivX films on Drive B, you power down the Box, unplug Drive A, plug in Drive B, and power up again. Volia.
I wasn't suggesting that'd it be used to hook up multiple HDD at once, nor did I say it would great speed-wise. But it's (debatably) better than rackmount or the 411GB idea, right?

If your intent is to have more disk space available, then the removable drive tray idea is the safest to use.

I think the title may have been missleading, I thought it actually meant plugging a USB2 device into the xbox usb 1 port, which of course you can do anyway.    The thread should have been "how to convert an ide hard drive to a usb device".
