XBox DVD Drive In PC
« on: June 20, 2002, 03:11:00 AM »

Yup.

And it didnt work for me (drive didnt recognise in Bios/Windoze) but there are un-confirmed reports that it has worked for others.

Be interested to see if others have got it working and what PC Bios' / mobo's they have.

"DVD-9 is not a new format. If you've ever seen a Dual Layer DVD (not Dual Sided), those are DVD-9. What MS did was actually quite ingenious. Since there are not home DVD-9 recorders, MS decided to stuck the entire contents of the game onto the second layer and leave pointer files and such onto the first layer. The firmware in the XBox can read the pointer files and then know where on the disc to start the game code. If you try putting an XBox game into a PC drive, it will not be able to read it because of this strange file structure. In order to correctly get the data off the disc you would need to do 1 of 2 things:

1) Write a frimware for your PC DVD drive so that it can recognize and read the XBox DVD-9 file structure

2) Much like the Dreamcast, create a driver and OS (Linux most likely) that would allow your computer to recognize the XBox as a networked drive. This would allow the XBox drive to read the disc and transfer the code through the Ethernet to your PC.

I've heard that there is a drive and special firmware already floating around that can read XBox titles. If you search, you'll be able to find the drive. As for the firmware, that's an entirely different story. It'll be awhile before people are able to easilly backup their titles.

Hope that helps!!
