Xdsl - Many Questions
« on: September 08, 2009, 07:27:00 PM »

i have been trying for a long time to learn myself with linux.  im running dsl on my box, and for the most part its a neat little OS.  it boots fast, and reinstalling it is a breeze since it only takes a few minutes due to its size.

for weeks however, i have been trying to setup dsl on my box so that i can download torrents to my xbox partitions.  i have a folder named 'downloads' on my f part.

i have found that if i log in to terminal as root, then execute the command, firefox, i can save files (images, mp3s) directly to my partition in firefox, as FF is being run under the root user.

this is'nt exactly what i need, however.

i downloaded the current opera for linux onto the system because of its built in torrent downloading capabilities.  working in 640x480, having as much of everything slimlined into one package is preferred.

heres where i am stuck:
* i cannot execute opera from a terminal command
* if i am able to execute opera from command line, how can i configure its downloading directory?
* if i am downloading a rar, zip, etc. - how can i unzip and compile the contents in linux, the way winrar does?

further:
i am thinking of reinstalling linux and starting over from scratch so i will have the option of loading into the root by default.  aside from selecting NO to the 'auto login' idea, is there a way to configure linux to boot directly as root?

my thinking is as follows:
if i leave the auto login option unselected, i can type in root and the password to login as root.  is there a way to simply automate logging in as root?

its nto a bad system to work with, but its complicated.  i am willing to learn, and have been reading forever about making it all work, but havent really gotten anywhere.  not much xbox related information out there on the DSL forums, either.

any help is appreciated.

yeah, im just looking for info on how to download torrents directly into my F part.

i can download into the loop-back FS.  i can then move the files via enelfm (or whatever it is; logged in as root) to my F part.  this is alright for downloading movies and music, but useless for downloading large files due to the 2Gb limit of the loopback.

the bittorrent for linux is OK.  i can work with it.  i cant get it to download to the F part tho.  thats what i really want it to do.

as i've said many times, i have read, read, and read some more on linux.  im not interested in a full comp. setup with it, its not that functional in all honesty.

but, for the xbox, for downloading straight to the HD to bypass downloading on the home pc and FTP'ing data over, its great.

and really, my "daunting" questions arent that bad.  i even bulleted my primary objectives.  im mainly now only interested in downloading torrents to the F part.

*  how can i download torrents to the F part.

good lookin out, tho.

yeah, F is mounted.

the issue lies with user permissions now.  DSL defaults as the user "DSL", which has limited write options to the drive.

i am only able to save to my F part when logged in as root.

so i login to root in terminal, then from terminal i must execute commands to open apps.  simply double clicking them on the desktop runs them as DSL for me.  fortunately, firefox has a command "firefox".

downloading torrents is a problem tho, because the bittorrent app for DSL is command line driven only, and has NIL support as far as a GUI goes.  hence i better have my long URL of the torrent ready to manually type in by hand to get what i want.  even stil, the app does not have a method for configuring wherre to downloasd to, so it defautls to home/dsl, which is in the loopback FS.

i want to download files which exceed the loopback size (4 Gb and up).  either 1) we need a way to increase the loopback size, or 2) we need a much better torrent application.

further, how the hell does utorrent not crash for you?  i have a standalone utorrent so i dont need to install it in wine, but once i try to change the download path, it hangs!

i will look over your mounting tips too, tho.  maybe it will work with my setup for some reason.
